In some ways, Alshon Jeffery is similar to former Vikings WR Sidney Rice – a former Gamecock and a big, productive receiver with good body control. OVERVIEW

After playing well over 235 pounds during his junior season, Jeffery surprised National Football League coaches and scouts when he appeared at a trim 216 pounds during 2012 NFL Scouting Combine festivities. A big, physical receiver in the mold of Seattle Sea-hawks' Mike Williams, the junior had entered the 2011 campaign regarded as one of the elite pass catchers in the collegiate ranks, but the expected banner campaign failed to materialize.

With NFL offenses stressing not only size, strength and speed at the wide receiver position, Jeffery's frame provides a quarterback with an imposing target over the middle of the field. Much like Detroit's Calvin Johnson, Jeffery's ability to elevate and attack the ball at its highest point has seen him gain considerable success working in traffic.

Jeffery uses his size well to compensate for a lack of built-up speed and while he will need patient coaching to help him refine his patterns (undisciplined route runner), he is tough and aggressive fighting for the ball. Where the junior excels is inside the red zone, as his size creates mismatches for smaller cornerbacks.

The receiver might not have the speed to elude those corners after the catch, but with his long strides after the catch, he has been quite effective getting under the ball on deep routes. He has that rare combination of hand-eye coordination, body control and hand strength to make the acrobatic catches seem routine, as he compensates for adequate hip snap with very good arm extension and elevation to secure the ball at its high point.

Jeffery was a two-sport standout during his playing days at Calhoun County in local St. Matthews, South Carolina, playing football for Saints head coach Tommy Benson and basketball for former University of South Carolina standout, Zam Fredrick Sr. On the gridiron, he lined up at flanker and cornerback, gaining 910 receiving yards with fourteen touchdowns as a junior, earning Division I All-Region V honors in 2007.

Jeffery arrived for his prep senior campaign bulked up to 215 pounds. Prior to his final season, Scout.com called him, "This year's closest thing to Calvin Johnson, Jeffrey is a complete receiver. His size alone creates a mismatch and he knows how to use it. He possesses outstanding body control and is able to leverage defensive backs and seal them off. A jump-ball winner, this skill makes him nearly unstoppable in the red zone. He can turn short routes into touchdowns from anywhere on the field."

The receiver lived up to that praise, earning All-State first-team honors as a defensive back in 2008 after recording 50 tackles while scoring three times with kick and punt returns. He added 740 yards and 14 scores on 35 receptions that year, earning an invitation to play in the Shrine Bowl and the Under Armour All-Star Game. He was selected part of Mobile Press Register's Super Southeast 120 and earned a spot on the Rivals.com Top 100 list.

Jeffery entered the recruiting wars rated the 13th-best wide receiver and the fourth-best player in the state of South Carolina by Rivals.com. He was a four-star recruit and the 22nd-best wide receiver in the nation, according to Scout.com. Prep Star ranked him as the 74th-best player in the nation and he was regarded as the fourth-best player in the state of South Carolina by Super Prep. On the basketball court, Jeffery helped Calhoun County win four state titles.

Jeffery originally committed to Southern California and also considered Tennessee among many offers. He was finally lured to South Carolina by recruiting coordinator Shane Beamer, whose father, Frank, is the head coach at Virginia Tech. The receiver signed his national letter-of-intent to become a Gamecock on Feb. 4, 2009.

While the staff hoped to bring Jeffery along slowly, he forced his way into the starting lineup at split end, earning Freshman All-American honors while also receiving fourth-team All-Southeastern Conference recognition. He led the team with 46 receptions for 763 yards (16.59 ypc) and six touchdowns, recording three 100-yard receiving performances. He had three scoring grabs vs. Kentucky, which rank tied for second on the school game-record chart.

Jeffery's ascension to elite status came in 2010, as the sophomore was named a finalist for the Fred Biletnikoff Award, given to the nation's top receiver. The consensus All-American and unanimous All-SEC first-team choice led the league and ranked fifth in the nation for receiving yards (108.36 ypg) and placed second in the conference with an average of 6.29 receptions per game.

The receiver paced the Gamecocks by setting school season-records with 88 catches for 1,517 yards (17.24 ypc), resulting in nine scores. His 192 receiving yards vs. Auburn rank as the fourth-best game in South Carolina annals, while his eight 100-yard receiving performances established a new school annual mark.

The 2011 season was a trying time for Jeffery. Turmoil off the field led to the dismissal of quarterback Stephen Garcia early in the schedule and the passing game suffered, finishing 95th nationally with an average of 181.46 yards per game. The split end was also benched for the beginning of the Navy game due to a team rules violation.

Jeffery also played in the season finale with a broken bone in his left hand, yet he still made a one-handed 18-yard scoring stab vs. Clemson. He underwent surgery to repair the fracture after the regular season schedule, but showed no ill effects as he hauled in four passes for 148 yards and a score vs. Nebraska in the Capital One Bowl.

Prior to the bowl clash, Jeffery was limited in practices while allowing his hand to heal. He ran and caught a few passes with only his right hand.

His final totals vs. the Huskers proved that he was more than ready to play, as Jeffery had a surprisingly productive day in the bowl, playing just weeks after surgery on his hand. However, he was called for a personal foul penalty and ejected with just over two minutes left in the third quarter along with Cornhuskers cornerback Alfonso Dennard, when both were caught throwing punches at each other after a play. "Getting ejected, that is something that happened in the moment," Jeffery said. The Gamecocks would march to a 30-13 victory with their star receiver watching from the sidelines.

Soon after that contest, it was revealed that Jeffery had played in his last college game. On Jan. 5, 2012, he announced that he was leaving school and was entering the 2012 NFL Draft. "I plan to forgo my senior season and enter the NFL Draft," said Jeffery. "I would like to thank the fans, my teammates, Coach Spurrier and everyone involved for all the opportunities South Carolina has provided me. I am proud to say I will always be a Gamecock."
