Position analysis: Offensive tackles

After Matt Kalil, there might not be many (any?) elite left tackles in this draft class. Several other picks in the top half of the draft could be slated for the right side. We review the strengths and weakness of the top 10 tackles in the draft.

POSITION OVERVIEW: Drafting offensive tackles doesn't sell a lot of season tickets or jerseys, but very few successful teams don't have elite offensive tackles. It's why they so consistently go high in the draft. When a team needs an upgrade at left tackle, it's usually the sign that bad times have already arrived. Other than quarterback, the blindside tackle that protects him is arguably the second-most vital position on the football field. As a result, players that might be viewed as lower rated at the tackle positions will get drafted higher than comparably rated players at other positions. It's no surprise that Minnesota is likely to take USC's Matt Kalil, perhaps the top left tackle to come out of the draft since Joe Thomas in 2007, with the third pick, and Iowa's Riley Reiff won't be far behind. Even players with injury histories or glaring weaknesses in their game will get drafted higher than they should. They don't sell tickets, but they're that important.

VIKINGS' OFFENSIVE TACKLES: Charlie Johnson, Phil Loadholt, Patrick Brown, DeMarcus Love.

VIKINGS' NEEDS: If the Vikings select Kalil with the third pick, this need will be greatly reduced. The current mindset is that, if Kalil is taken with the third pick, Johnson will get moved inside to guard and the Vikings O-line for 2012 will be set. There is always the chance that the Vikings might consider taking another versatile tackle/swingman late in the draft, but, given their laundry list of needs, if Kalil is the pick at No. 3, the Vikings will likely be done with drafting offensive tackles less than a half hour after the draft begins.

THE CREAM OF THE CROP

Matt Kalil, USC, 6-7, 306 – Fourth-year junior…Two-year starter who started all 25 games he played in that span…All-America choice in 2011 and winner of the Morris Trophy, given to the top lineman in the Pac 12…His father Frank played in the USFL and his brother Ryan plays center for the Carolina Panthers…As technically sound as any left tackle in the last five years and USC pundits claim he's the best Trojan LT since Tony Boselli…Lets defenders come to him in pass coverage and he reacts quickly to take away the opponent's strength…Explodes off the snap when run blocking and has excellent strength to keep defender's at arm's length…Plays hard on every play and keep going until the whistle…Could add some bulk, but has the body to do it…Doesn't have a lot of experience pulling and will need to spend more time on that aspect of his game…Isn't a dominator who wears out opponents, he's like a boxer who out-points you for a win…Ran a 4.96 40 at the Combine with 30 reps of 225 pounds and a 27-inch vertical jump. He didn't compete in the broad jump after suffering a toe injury during the Combine workouts. PROJECTION: If not for the QB draft frenzy that the NFL has become, a case could be made for Kalil to be the No. 1 pick. For my money, if you draft a player to make the Pro Bowl a half-dozen times in his career, in the Class of 2012, nobody is better equipped to be that guy than Kalil. He will go with the third pick in the draft.

Riley Reiff, Iowa, 6-6, 313 – Fourth-year junior…Started 37 of 39 career games…Was arrested for public intoxication and fleeing police in 2008 when he and other incoming freshman ran from a bust and led police on a 20-minute foot chase…As a freshman he made starts at both tackle spots and left guard before replacing Green Bay first-rounder Bryan Bulaga at left tackle the last two seasons…First-team All-Big Ten selection in 2011…Named Gatorade Player of the Year as a high school senior in South Dakota…Was a standout high school wrestler, compiling a record of 121-1 and winning three state titles…Has long arms and consistently neutralizes pass rushers…Has a strong hand punch that he uses effectively…The best run blocker in this year's draft class, using his quickness and lateral movement skills to get a consistent advantage…Is a smart player who uses technique and angles to leverage defenders where he wants them to go…Viewed as a big upside player with room to improve in several key areas…Doesn't have great pop or explosion off the snap and allows defenders to get moving forward…Doesn't have ideal upper-body strength (see below)…Was never used on pulls or traps in the Iowa system…Lets his pads get too high, which opens him up to power rushing DEs…Ran a 5.16 40 at the Combine with just 23 reps, a 26½-inch vertical jump and an 8-2 broad jump. PROJECTION: There are similarities between Reiff and Bulaga, who is the right tackle for the Packers and his skill set is one that could translate to either left or right tackle. He likely won't make it out of the top 10 picks.

THE NEXT LEVEL

Jonathan Martin, Stanford, 6-5, 312 – Fourth-year junior…Started 37 of 39 career games at left tackle protecting Andrew Luck's blindside…Moves fluidly and naturally in pass protection…Has a very strong hand punch…Has solid anchor strength to hold his ground…Uses leverage extremely well when he locks up defenders…Plays with a mean streak and seeks to dominate opponents…Doesn't explode off the snap and may struggle to keep up with NFL speed rushers…Doesn't have great foot speed and looks slow and sometimes awkward in space at the second level…Does not always play with good balance and will lunge and dive at quick defenders when beaten off the snap…Much better run blocker than pass protector…Did not work out in position drills at the Combine due to an undisclosed illness. PROJECTION: He isn't an elite athlete, but has enough positive qualities that he will get a serious look in the middle third of the first round, but some teams may project him more as a right tackle than a left tackle and it may slow his progress if shifted to the other side.

Mike Adams, Ohio State, 6-7, 323 – Fourth-year senior…Started the last 25 games of his college career…Injuries have plagued him throughout his career, missing eight games as a freshman with shoulder and foot injuries and eight games as a sophomore with a torn left meniscus…Was suspended five games in 2011 for his role in the selling of memorabilia for tattoos by OSU players…Was a first-team All-Big Ten selection as a junior and was named to the second team in 2011 despite playing just eight games…Has prototype size and arm length…As quick off the snap as any OT in this year's draft crop…Has natural foot movement skills and rarely gets out of position…Has a wide base and can redirect defenders when they try to loop around him…Holds up against speed and power rushers…Plays with a mean streak…His own aggression will take him out of position and leave him open to double-moves…Does not have elite upper-body strength (see below)…Was suspended for two games in 2009 after being cited for possession of drug paraphernalia earlier in the year, making character something of a concern…Needs to refine his technique – has gotten by on his imposing physical gifts…Comes out of his stance high and can be pushed back by power rushers when he gets sloppy…Ran a 5.28 40 at the Combine with a pathetic 19 reps of 225 pounds, a 28½-inch vertical jump and an 8-4 broad jump. PROJECTION: A prototype left tackle who has all the skills you look for and made a strong showing at the Senior Bowl. However, he hasn't always played up to his skill level and has just one full season under his belt. He's definitely a first-round talent, but his question marks may keep him on the board longer than expected.

Bobby Massie, Ole Miss, 6-6, 316 – Third-year junior who spent the 2008 season at Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia…Became a starter midway through his freshman season and started his final 29 games at right tackle…Has prototype size with long arms and strong hands…Is explosive off the snap and gets into position quickly…Has good lateral movement skills and can mirror defenders…Has extremely good upper-body strength and uses it to direct defenders in the run game…Has nimble feet and can keep up with speed rushers on the move…Has gotten by to date on his natural gifts and didn't show much in the way of season-to-season improvement in his career…Struggles against inside speed rushers…His work ethic has come into question…Makes contact with his pads too high and will lose leverage too often…Doesn't look natural or effective at the second level trying to make blocks…Ran a 5.18 40 at the Combine with 22 reps, a 27½-inch vertical jump and an 8-7 broad jump. PROJECTION: A gifted natural athlete, he doesn't always play like someone who has the fire to be the best he can be. In the right system, he has Pro Bowl potential, but is viewed by most as a right tackle only, which will drop his stock into the second round.

THE BEST OF THE REST

Zebrie Sanders, Florida State, 6-6, 320 – Four-year starter…Started 50 of 53 games, playing right tackle his first three seasons and left tackle in 2011…First-team All-ACC as a senior…Has vines for arms (35 inches) and massive hands (11 inches) and uses them well…Has good footwork and solid technique in pass protection…Experience at both tackle spots is a big plus…Very good on the move pulling and trapping and finding people to hit at the second level…Gets off the snap quickly and seeks out contact…Is a durable athlete who plays hurt…Struggles badly against speed rushers and gets beat too easily…Doesn't have the big frame and thick trunk typically associated with NFL O-linemen…Doesn't have great balance and gets knocked off his base too often…Doesn't have elite functional playing strength…Isn't a consistent finisher…Ran a 5.33 40 at the Combine with 28 reps off 225 pounds, a 27-inch vertical jump and an 8-4 broad jump. PROJECTION: A player with many of the intangibles to be a solid pro, he has the kind of body that could add 10-20 pounds of bulk at the next level. His experience at both tackle spots may push him higher than we have him ranked on draft weekend.

Mitchell Schwartz, Cal, 6-5, 318 – Fifth-year senior…Started all 51 games of his college career – 35 at left tackle and 16 at right tackle…Was a first-team All-Pac 12 selection and Academic All-Pac 12 as a senior…His brother Geoff is a guard with the Vikings…Had back surgery prior to his senior season…Has almost prototype size for an O-lineman…Has experience, durability, toughness and maturity…Has added bulk in each of his four seasons at Cal…Is a smart player who uses leverage and angles to his advantage…Is technically sound and uses his feet well…Is not an elite athlete and doesn't project to be a left tackle at the pro level – some believe he may even have to move to guard at some point…Doesn't have great upper-body strength…Has problems maintaining his balance and ends up on the ground too often…Has a decent hand punch but doesn't consistently use it effectively…Gets pushed back too often…Ran a 5.38 40 at the Combine with 23 reps, a 26½ inch vertical jump and a 7-5 broad jump. PROJECTION: A durable, experienced college linemen with limited upside, he is likely a candidate for right tackle only. But his toughness is his calling card and he will have a career in the NFL. However, he may have to wait until the third or fourth round to get that career started.

Jeff Allen, Illinois, 6-4, 307 – Fourth-year senior…Started 47 of 49 career games – playing his freshman year at right tackle and the last three at left tackle…As high school senior, weighed 335 pounds and dropped to 290 as a freshman…Has the physical attributes to be a solid player…At his best in pass protection…A team leader who was a two-time captain…Has good technique in pass protection…Keeps his feet moving and uses lateral skills to keep rushers on his outside shoulder…Uses his hands well…Doesn't always play up to his skill level…Doesn't have long arms and tries to use finesse more than power to neutralize defenders…Gets called for too many holding penalties because he grabs defenders when he gets beat…Takes more big hits than he delivers…Doesn't have great awareness and will get caught off-guard by stunts and double-moves…Ran a 5.17 40 at the Combine with 26 reps, a 27½-inch vertical jump and an 8-6 broad jump. PROJECTION: A player that scouts have widely varied opinions of, he doesn't project as a left tackle in the NFL. A four-year starter in the Big Ten is a solid résumé builder, but his lack of elite traits will push him to the end of Day 2 of the draft.

Brandon Mosley, Auburn, 6-6, 314 – Fourth-year senior who spent two years at Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College, where he played tight end and defensive tackle…Started 24 of 27 career games for the Tigers – 21 at right tackle and three at left tackle…Has long arms and big hands to jolt defenders…Plays with intensity and has a finisher's mean streak…Good upper-body strength (see below)…Has good agility to slide and seal off defenders…Keeps a square base and doesn't often get out of position…Dedicated, vocal team leader…Is raw and his skill set won't transfer to some pro offenses and will have to get drafted into the right scheme…Is over-aggressive and allows defenders to take advantage of it…Doesn't have a lot of pop coming out of his stance…Struggled against speed rushers…Projects only as a right tackle after bombing out early last year when tried at left tackle…Ran a 5.14 40 at the Combine with 30 reps, a 27-inch vertical jump and an 8-7 broad jump. PROJECTION: A solid lunch-pail-type right tackle who will draw interest from teams in need because of his love of the game, but his limitations will hurt him and could push him to be a priority pick early on Day 3 of the draft.

Tom Compton, South Dakota, 6-5, 314 – Fifth-year senior…Started all 43 games of his college career…Went largely unrecruited because of knee surgery his senior year of high school…Made his first 21 starts at right tackle and his last 22 at left tackle…Is country strong, can bench press 375 pounds and squat more than 700 pounds…Is a fiery run blocker who looks to attack defenders…Has good agility and awareness to counter double moves and outside blitzes…Has a mean streak…Has long arms and uses them effectively…Played marginal competition and doesn't translate as a left tackle at the next level…Is not an elite athlete…Doesn't have ideal footwork and will get off-balance too easily and needs refinement…Is not natural in space and lunges to make blocks at the second level…Ran a 5.01 40 at the Combine with 20 reps of 225 pounds, a 30-inch vertical jump and a 9-0 broad jump. PROJECTION: Dominated the FCS competition he played, but has a long learning curve to make the jump to the NFL. He will find a niche as a run-blocking right tackle, but his athletic limitations will keep him on the board until Day 3 of the draft. Visited the Vikings.
