Position Analysis: Defensive tackles

There are a few top defensive tackle prospects that would fit the Vikings' needs, but after that there are a select few that fit a run-stopping mode. We review the top 10 options at defensive tackle, where the Vikings could use a developmental type.

POSITION OVERVIEW: One of the deeper draft positions in the Class of 2012, there are plenty of talented players that will fill needs throughout the draft. As many as five DTs grade out as first-round prospects, but, a more likely scenario will see three of four DTs come off in each of the draft's seven rounds, making this one of the more impressive positions. With Donati Poe, Fletcher Cox and Michael Brockers all vying to be the first defensive tackle off the board, there will be no shortage of teams looking to fill needs at the position – and the talent pools runs deep enough to answer a lot of those requests.

VIKINGS' DEFENSIVE TACKLES: Kevin Williams, Letroy Guion, Fred Evans, Christian Ballard, Everson Griffen.

VIKINGS' NEED: The Vikings haven't adequately replaced Pat Williams, who retired after the 2010 season. Last year, they hoped Remi Ayodele would be the answer, but he never panned out and was subsequently released. Williams is starting to show the signs of age and both Evans and Guion have been role players that have yet to prove they can be full-time starters. There is clearly a need here, especially with Williams starting to wear down physically. Given the Vikings' other needs, this position won't likely be addressed until the third day of the draft, but expect to see the Vikings add someone into the mix to compete with Evans, Guion and Ballard – either for the other starting spot or as a backup in the D-line rotation.

THE CREAM OF THE CROP

Dontari Poe, Memphis, 6-4, 346 – Third-year junior…Became a starter midway through his true freshman season and started his final 30 games…In his Memphis career, he had 101 tackles, 21.5 tackles for losses, five sacks and four forced fumbles…Won state high school titles in both the shot put (twice) and the discus…Is massive and requires double-teams on every down…Has rare explosiveness off the snap…A rare athlete who showed off at the Combine like few others…Consistently collapses the pocket…A finisher on tackles…Excellent upper- and lower-body strength combination…Has short arms and will struggle to push off of double teams at the next level…Faced marginal competition, which he dominated…Does not play with great leverage…Although disruptive, had modest production numbers and few sacks…Doesn't play with a lot of fire or intensity…Ran a 4.89 40 at the Combine with a mammoth 44 reps of 225 pounds, a 29½-inch vertical jump and an 8-9 broad jump. PROJECTION: He was an intriguing prospect prior to Combine, but after showing his athleticism in Indy, he vaulted into top-10 consideration. Once thought to be viewed as the top nose tackle prospect, he has moved to the top of the DT charts whether a team runs a 4-3 or a 3-4.

Fletcher Cox, Mississippi State, 6-4, 298 – Third-year junior…Two-year starter who improved every season – as a junior, he had 56 tackles, 14.5 tackles for losses and five sacks…A strong special teams player who blocked five kicks in three years…In 2011, he was named SEC Defensive Player of the Week four times on his way to a first-team All-SEC selection…Excellent size and can add more weight and bulk to his frame…Very light on his feet with exceptional lateral movement skills to slide and fill holes…Has good strength and has shown improvement in using it to his advantage in each of his three seasons…A solid finisher on tackles…A quick closer who rarely misses when he has a player in his sights…Is often slow getting started off the snap…Is a limited pass rusher who simply tries to bull rush on almost every snap…Gets knocked off-balance too easily by O-linemen who use leverage…A raw prospect who will need some refinement…Ran a 4.77 40 at the Combine with 30 reps, a 26-inch vertical jump and an 8-7 broad jump. PROJECTION: A fast-rising prospect because of his physical gifts, his ability to succeed in just about any defensive scheme makes him attractive to 32 teams, not 10 or 20. Because of that, his stock has been inflated and he will likely be off the board by the middle of the first round, but will need time to reach his true potential.

Michael Brockers, LSU, 6-5, 322 – Third-year sophomore…One-year starter who posted 54 tackles, 10 tackles for a loss and two sacks…Came to LSU as a 250-pound DE and added 70 pounds over the last three years…Outstanding combination of size, speed and strength…Has good burst off the snap and gets across the line quickly…Uses his hands effectively to drive blockers back…Great closing speed to deliver big hits…Can fit in either a 3-4 or 4-3 scheme – has the size to set the edge as a 3-4 DE…Only a one-year starter…Doesn't play with great balance or leverage…Doesn't have ideal lower-body anchor strength to hold up against double teams…Needs a lot of technique work…Gets his legs chopped out from under him too often…Didn't lift at the Combine because of a right shoulder injury, but ran a 5.31 40 with a 26½-inch vertical jump and an 8-9 broad jump. PROJECTION: A player we really like because of his athleticism and ability to play at multiple positions, he would have been the first DT off the board had he stayed one more year at LSU. Some believe the Tigers are a system program that sent Glenn Dorsey and Tyson Jackson to the NFL and neither has performed very well. He may be a slider on draft day, but has the skills to be a top 10-15 pick.

THE NEXT LEVEL

Jerel Worthy, Michigan State, 6-2, 308 – Fourth-year junior…Made starts in 38 of 40 career games, finishing his career with 107 tackles, 27.5 tackles for losses, 12 sacks and two fumble recoveries…First MSU D-tackle to be named first-team All-America in 40 years…Has a violent hand punch that drives blockers backward…Plays with good leverage and gets skinny to split O-linemen and get into the backfield…Hard to move in run defense…Has a good burst off the snap and initiates the action…Has good upper-body strength to win one-on-one battles…Good wrap-up tackler…Is inconsistent in his effort and has a habit of taking plays off…Will give up on plays when neutralized off the snap…Wears down at times late in games…Will come out of his stance high too often and let blockers get under him…Viewed as raw in terms of NFL technique…Did not lift at the Combine because of a pectoral strain, but ran a 5.00 40 with a 28½-inch vertical jump and an 8-11 broad jump. PROJECTION: A big, strong prospect who has some learning to do, but D-line coaches will love to get him and mold him in their image. He has plenty of natural gifts, but needs to tweak several elements of his game. His talent could get him drafted in the first round, but he is more likely to slip into Round 2.

Devon Still, Penn State, 6-5, 303 – Fifth-year senior…Two-year starter who had 85 tackles, 23.5 tackles for losses and seven sacks in that span…Two of his cousins (Levon Kirkland and Art Still) had long NFL careers…Redshirted in 2007 after tearing his right ACL and broke his left ankle in 2008…Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year as a senior…Has an impressive combination of size and strength…Has excellent burst off the snap and gets across the line quickly…Plays with a mean streak until he hears the whistle…Has good anchor strength…Has strong hands to shed blockers…Is long and allows blockers to get under his pads too easily…Gets his legs cut too often and too easily…Doesn't hold his ground consistently…Effort and fire are inconsistent…Never fully lived up to the lofty expectations assigned to him…Ran a 5.01 40 at the Combine with 26 reps of 225 pounds and a 29½-inch vertical jump, but didn't perform in the broad jump or shuttle drills after suffering a turf toe injury during the workouts. PROJECTION: A natural athlete who looks the part, he has a lot of intangibles going his way. But he is a player whose stock has gone in the wrong direction over the last three months and has dropped from a first round prospect to the second round. However, his upside is very good and someone will pull the trigger early in the second round.

Kendall Reyes, U-Conn, 6-4, 299 – Fifth-year senior…Became a starter late in his freshman season and started 41 of his last 42 games…A two-time team captain…Arrived at Storrs weighing just 245 pounds…In his final two seasons, he registered 85 tackles, 23.5 tackles for losses and seven sacks…Extremely athletic and capable of blowing up plays…A versatile player who was used at multiple line positions at both DT and DE…Has big hands and has a penchant for reading, reacting and batting down passes or altering throws…Has the strength to stack the line and chase plays down…Is still growing into his frame and can add 10-15 pounds without sacrificing his quickness…Isn't a consistent pass-rushing threat…Doesn't have great closing speed…Has problems facing up to double teams…Faced marginal competition…Ends up on the ground far too often…Ran a 4.82 40 at the Combine with 36 reps, an impressive 34½-inch vertical jump and a 9-5 broad jump. PROJECTION: Some scouts absolutely love his potential, but he isn't a dominator in a non-power conference, which could create some problems at the NFL level. He has the ability to be a DT penetrator, but his game will need some refinement. He could easily go higher than we have him rated, which is a player on the cusp of the second and third rounds.

THE BEST OF THE REST

Brandon Thompson, Clemson, 6-2, 314 – Fourth-year senior…Three-year starter who amassed 182 tackles, 17.5 tackles for losses and 3.5 sacks in that span…Had his ankle scoped prior to the Senior Bowl, but still played in the game – displaying some toughness…Has a ton of in-game strength that he uses to be disruptive in the middle…Incredible tackle production for a DT…Very good burst off the snap to be disruptive…His quickness and good hand use makes it hard for blockers to wrap him up…Gets skinny and blows up run plays…Doesn't have a variety of pass rush moves and, for all his production, his sacks numbers were almost nonexistent…Comes out of his stance high at times and takes himself out of too many plays…Needs technique work because he rarely pushes O-linemen backward…Has long arms but doesn't use them effectively and struggles to keep blockers off of him…When tied up, he stays tied up…Chose not to run at the Combine, but did 35 reps of 225 pounds with a 31-inch vertical jump and an 8-4 broad jump. PROJECTION: His versatility is intriguing and somebody will jump on him in the second or third round, but he will need to improve his technique considerably to be a viable NFL starter.

Alameda Ta'amu, Washington, 6-3, 348 – Fourth-year senior…Became a starter midway through his true freshman season and started 42 of 50 career games…Finished his Huskies career with 109 tackles, 16.5 tackles for losses and 7.5 sacks…A massive wide-body who routinely occupies two blockers…Has great overall strength to clog the middle…Is a difference-maker in run defense…Knocks O-linemen back consistently…Is quick off the snap…Doesn't have good foot speed and doesn't chase down many plays…Has had weight problems and, at one point, weighed 390 pounds…Not a pass-rush threat or a big playmaker – had a minimal amount of sacks, didn't bat down any passes and didn't force any fumbles…Has short arms and allows blockers to go face-up too easily…Injured his hamstring running the 40 at the Combine, but posted a time of 5.30 prior to the injury. He also had 35 reps of 225 pounds with a 26-inch vertical jump and an 8-7 broad jump. PROJECTION: He is a classic two-down nose tackle who has some significant limitations. Given how many teams play a 3-4 defense, he has a lot of value as a nose tackle, which should have him coming off the board at some point on Day 2 of the draft.

Billy Winn, Boise State, 6-4, 294 – Fourth-year senior…Three-year starter who started all 39 games in that span…In those three seasons, he recorded 105 tackles, 31 tackles for losses, 13 sacks and four fumble recoveries…Played both DE and DT in college, making him a versatile prospect…Has a powerful first couple of steps and gets into the backfield consistently…Had a vicious hand punch that keeps O-linemen at bay…Has good short-area speed to slide, re-direct and make plays…Has good instincts to read and react to plays in front of him…Is slow off the snap and always seems to be the last player moving…Has difficulty getting big O-linemen off of his body when engaged…Has good strength, but doesn't dominate at the point of attack…Production dropped steadily in his final three years in terms of tackles, tackles-for-loss and sacks…Ran a 4.86 40 at the Combine with 24 reps, a 27-inch vertical jump and an 8-11 broad jump. PROJECTION: A DE-DT 'tweener, Winn has enough ability to be a productive linemen in most schemes, but his lack of top-end intangibles will make him likely remain on the board until the early portion of Day 3.

Derek Wolfe, Cincinnati, 6-5, 295 – Fourth-year senior…Three-year starter who made starts in all 38 games in that span…Blew up as a senior, recording 70 tackles, 21.5 tackles for a loss, 9.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries – all of which equaled or exceeded his production from his first three seasons…Named All-American Strength and Conditioning Athlete of the Year as a junior by the National Strength and Conditioning Association…Was named Co-Big East Defensive Player of the Year in 2011…Ferocious game mentality and fights to the whistle on every play…Has excellent size and growth potential…Has an explosive first step off the snap and presses the action…Very coachable and a hard worker…His motor never stops or idles…Doesn't have ideal anchor strength to hold up vs. double-teams…Allows blockers into his body too easily…Viewed by some scouts as a DE/DT 'tweener…Once he is blocked, he tends to stay blocked…Didn't play elite competition on a regular basis…Ran a 4.93 40 at the Combine with 33 reps of 225 pounds, a 33½-inch vertical jump and a 9-0 broad jump. PROJECTION: A solid developmental project, he can immediately provide depth along the D-line, but isn't viewed at this point as a starter, which will almost surely drop him well into the third day of the draft.
