Bennett Signs for Five Years

The Vikings completed a hectic week of signings by getting Michael Bennett signed to a five-year contract Saturday night.

While VU was monitoring the progress of the Michael Bennett contract talks while packing and preparing for a Mankato delegation for training camp, one thought came to mind -- how many contracts can the Vikings get done in one week?

After all, signing Randy Moss, five rookies and four free agents meant a lot of calling and not a lot of time to focus on one player or one deal. Well, that didn't stop the Vikings. Saturday night, the team announced a deal had been struck with Michael Bennett -- a five-year agreement that could pay him as much as $8.7 million.

The contract includes a base of $6.2 million over five years, including a $2.65 million signing bonus. In addition, Bennett could make an additional $2.5 million in incentive escalators based on rushing yardage. Throw that in with $200,000 bonuses for reporting to training camp on time and the contract could total $8.7 million if Bennett meets all the incentives.

All that remains now is to get Bennett in uniform and working out. The Vikings have indicated that they intend to run a committee system in the backfield during training camp, but Bennett can go a long way to dispelling that notion.
