Scouting Report: Ben Nelson

The Vikings still haven't settled on a No. 2 wide receiver, but rookie free agent Ben Nelson is just concerned about catching on in the NFL. Here is the wide receiver's predraft scouting report from TFY Draft Preview.

Name: Ben Nelson School: St. Cloud State Year: Sr.

Ht: 6-0.5 Wt: 180 40: 4.59 Pos: WR

Bio: All-Conference and All-America choice as a senior after leading the team with 69 receptions for 1,072 yards and amassing 23 touchdowns. Totaled 60-1,018-16 as a junior with 19-330-2 the prior campaign.

Pos: Productive pass catcher and natural receiver with a penchant for making plays in the red zone. Displays soft hands, extends and gives the quarterback a big target. Looks the pass in, stays focused and shows good eye/hand coordination. Times deep receptions well, shields opponents away with his body and effectively uses the sidelines. Adjusts to the errant throw and catches the ball away from his frame.

Neg: Lacks the deep speed or second gear and doesn't get separation down the field. Level of competition is a concern.

Analysis: Dominated the opposition but does not have the top size/speed numbers to be considered anything other than a late-round pick. That said, very productive and has a serious chance to be a team's fourth receiver.
