Bears bench Spencer, promote Rachal

The Chicago Bears have made a personnel change on the offensive line. Left guard Chris Spencer will be replaced by Chilo Rachal. The Chicago Tribune first reported the news.

Spencer struggled in the preseason and was called out by coordinator Mike Tice after a very poor performance in the preseason opener.

"He wasn't stellar in the opener," said Tice in August. "And at the end of the day [we want to] make sure we put the right five guys in there."

Spencer gave up a sack against the Green Bay Packers on Thursday in the first half and was subpar as both a run blocker and in pass protection throughout the contest. He was signed in the 2011 offseason after playing center his entire career with the Seattle Seahawks. He played right guard for the Bears last season and switched to the left side in training camp this year, where he had never played before.

Obviously, it was move that just didn't pan out.

This isn't a huge surprise, as Tice rotated Rachal and Spencer with the first team during the preseason. Rachal was signed this offseason after four years in San Francisco. He has 38 starts in his career, all at right guard.

"[Rachal] brings intensity," said Tice in camp. "He wants to be good. He's played in a good program. He's done a lot of winning in his life. He wants to get better. He wants to do things the right way."

The Bears gave up seven sacks to the Packers on Thursday and have allowed nine overall in the first two contests this year. That is obviously not good enough for Tice, who isn't afraid to shake things up. If J'Marcus Webb continues to struggle on the left edge, don't be surprised if he's the next offensive lineman to get the hook.
