Remembering Big K

While the team is publicly remembering Korey Stringer, there is also talk of retiring his jersey, which takes a lot in the NFL.

As the Vikings memorialized Korey Stringer Friday afternoon in Edina, talks have already begun to retire Korey Stringer's No. 77 and pay honor to the fallen offensive tackle before a game this season.

Although nothing has been made public or finalized, a ceremony could come as early as the home opener Aug. 16 vs. Pittsburgh, but more likely for the regular season opener Sept. 9 vs. Carolina. It would be fitting for that date, since the immediate emotion of the moment will have subsided and it would give a chance for Stringer's longtime friend and linemate Todd Steussie, now with the Panthers, to be on hand for the ceremony.

The Vikings have used the retirement of numbers very sparingly. Only three players -- Jim Marshall, Fran Tarkenton, and Alan Page -- have had their numbers retired by the team, although new Hall of Famer Ron Yary is likely to have his number retired this year, according to a team source -- something that would have been difficult prior to this year because Steussie wore Yary's No. 73 as a Viking.

The organization will likely make a public announcement within the next week or two if it decided to retire Stringer's number, but, considering the circumstances of his death -- on the field in the service of the Vikings -- it seems like a done deal, pending NFL approval.

* While yesterday was a day for local remembering of Stringer, the actual funeral will be Monday in Warren, Ohio.
* About 1,000 fans attended the public visitation for Stringer in Edina. The team attended an earlier, private service. To show how much Stringer was loved, even the Green Bay Packers sent a flower arrangement, with LeRoy Butler and Santana Dotson attending. Former NFL player Kevin Green was also in attendance, along with former Viking greats and politicians.
* Former Vikings tackle Ron Yary will be inducted into the Hall of Fame today. The ceremonies will be carried on ESPN2 starting at 10:30 a.m.
