It would appear that the Antoine Winfield era could be over in Minnesota.
ESPN's Ed Werder reported late Wednesday afternoon that Winfield was in the process of finalizing a contract that will send him to the Seattle Seahawks. Hours later, NFL.com reported that Winfield is deciding between the Seahawks and Vikings.
The Vikings released Winfield, who turns 36 this season, but there had been some hope that he would re-sign with the team at a more team-friendly price. When that didn't happen in the next week, Winfield started meeting with other teams.
Two weeks ago, Winfield met with the Washington Redskins, but their interest appeared to cool when the team re-signed free agent DeAngelo Hall. His next stop was Seattle and, from the sounds of things, the two sides started working on the basic framework of a deal and the details are being finalized. An inquiry to Winfield's agent wasn't immediately returned.
The conventional wisdom is that Winfield would ideally serve as a slot cornerback, where his physicality and run-stopping skills would be at their best. The Seahawks have a pair of young corners that would play the outside – Richard Sherman and Brandon Browner, who combined for 11 interceptions last year.
While a contract has yet to officially be signed, it would appear that a decision is coming in the near future. Winfield could be the latest veteran set to join in the arms race being waged between the Seahawks and 49ers, and the latest to leave the Vikings for the Seahawks.
