This time Antoine Winfield is confirming the speculation, telling ESPN that has agreed to a one-year deal with the Seattle Seahawks, ending his nine-year run with the Minnesota Vikings.
ESPN reported on Wednesday that Winfield was close to signing with the Seahawks, but NFL.com reported that he was struggling with his loyalty with the Vikings.
The Vikings released Winfield just before the start of free agency in a salary cap move. He was due to count $7.25 million against the salary cap in 2013 and the Vikings wanted to sign their younger pending free agents instead of paying Winfield that money.
In the month since, the Vikings have left the door open for his return at a lower salary, but the two sides were unable to come to terms as the Washington Redskins and Seahawks pursued the wily cornerback.
Winfield will turn 36 this season.
Two weeks ago, Winfield met with the Washington Redskins, but their interest appeared to cool when they re-signed free agent DeAngelo Hall.
Winfield is expected to be the nickel cornerback with the Seahawks, who have two big, accomplished cornerbacks to handle the outside – Richard Sherman and Brandon Browner, who combined for 11 interceptions last year.
