The Vikings' unveiling of their new uniforms Thursday night at their annual draft party brought strong reviews from the players modeling them, from the purple pants to the lettering to the darker colors – and the biggest hit of all, the matte finish on their new helmets.
"They're traditional. They're retro. We've got the shape of the ship in the jersey. We've got the true gold. They're nice," defensive end Everson Griffen said. "The matte black, when they asked me what's the best, I was like it's when you've got that good suit on and you put on that perfect tie, that's what the helmet is – the helmet is like the tie for the suit. It brings everything together and makes everything look so nice and crispy."
Griffen was one of four Vikings modeling the new look, joining quarterback Christian Ponder, tight end Kyle Rudolph and fullback Jerome Felton.
Ponder had on the purple jersey and white pants, but he, too, liked the helmets.
"It's very unique. I remember seeing the matte helmet – I think Florida State may have had one after I left so I didn't get to experience the sweet matte helmets," Ponder said. "For us to have one, I don't know how many other teams will have one – I don't know if the other new uniforms will have them – so to be that unique, it will be awesome."
The players also liked the black facemasks attached to the front of the helmet.
Another hit with them was the return of the purple pants.
"I love the purple pants. Obviously we haven't worn them the past couple years. I think the purple pants look great, especially with the white tops," Rudolph said.
Griffen personally likes the purple pants, but he wasn't sure the bigger bodies among his teammates would look as stylish.
"The purple pants up there, I like them, but there are going to be a couple people on the team that are going to look not good in them, but it's going to be all right," Griffen said. "I don't name names. Somebody may look like big grapes, but it is what it is."
Said Ponder: "I like the purple pants – you go purple on purple or white on purple, it's pretty awesome. I'm sure we'll wear the white pants most of the time, but to break out something different is pretty cool."
Griffen said the feel and fit of the jerseys is similar, but it's the combination of new technology and the old-school elements in the look that the players found attractive.
"I love them. It's an old-school look with the stripes on the sleeves and it's a more traditional look, but you mix the traditional look with a modern feel," Rudolph said. "The technology in the jerseys and the way they fit, you have that in the modern sense, the throwback look is pretty sharp."
