Vikings Pro Bowl linebacker Chad Greenway is having arthroscopic knee surgery Wednesday after an MRI revealed surgery could be helpful.
"Just some tenderness in his knee. We ended up doing an MRI and saw some things in there that we thought we needed to go in and clean up. That's what we're going to do," Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said.
Greenway led the Vikings last year with 191 tackles, including seven for a loss, and had three sacks, six quarterback hurries, seven passes defensed, two fumble recoveries and an interception on his way to a Pro Bowl season.
Greenway wasn't at the Vikings' voluntary practice on Tuesday and won't participate in their mandatory minicamp practices next week. He is, however, expected to be ready for the team's first training camp practice on July 26, according to Frazier.
"He had a little tension in his knee," Frazier said. "… We just wanted to get it down now rather than run into a situation where we get into camp and it continues to bother him and then we'd have some issues that we'd have to deal with there. We're going to have that done."
NFL MVP Adrian Peterson was among those that didn't participate in practice Tuesday, either, but Frazier called that a "coach's decision."
"No nagging injury. Just a decision to give him some time off," Frazier said.
Peterson said he could get more work done inside conditioning, working on his upper body and legs.
"I did more work inside there than I probably would have did out here. So, I guess you could say it was a day off, but it really wasn't," Peterson said.
Receiver Greg Jennings didn't attend practice, but that was because of a personal issue that will keep him out the rest of the week, according to Frazier. Jennings is expected back for next week's mandatory minicamp.
Those who sat out because of injury included DE Jared Allen (shoulder), LB Michael Mauti (knee), C John Sullivan (knee), WR Greg Childs (knees) and CB Jacob Lacey (thumb). Lacey's left arm was in a sling because of surgery last week to repair a dislocated thumb.
