Kalil ‘pretty confident' despite back injury

Matt Kalil believes he will be able to play despite sitting out his second straight practice with a lower back injury. Adrian Peterson (hamstring) is probable with a hamstring injury.

The Minnesota Vikings got Adrian Peterson back for Saturday's practice, but the team's best blocker, Matt Kalil, remained out of practice with a lower back injury.

Kalil, the Vikings' top pick in 2012 and a stabilizing force at left tackle on the offensive line, didn't practice Friday or Saturday as the Vikings prepared for the New York Giants.

"If it keeps progressing, I'm pretty confident," Kalil said in the locker room following Saturday's practice.

Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said he believes Kalil will play but listed him as questionable on the injury report.

If Kalil isn't able to play, J'Marcus Webb, claimed on waivers from the Chicago Bears, is next on the depth chart at tackle, although the Vikings only list a backup at right tackle.

"I feel real comfortable. This is going into Week 7, I think. I've gotten more comfortable with these guys after the first couple weeks. Things like that happen. You've got to be ready when you're called upon," Webb said.

Webb started 44 of 46 games over the previous three years for the Bears, but hasn't played an offensive down for the Vikings yet this season.

"I don't think I've completely became the player I want to be. Of course, I'm still young and I want to learn and keep working and keep learning my position and be able to collaborate with my other fellow guys on the line to be a good unit," Webb said. "Me personally, I'm focusing on my body staying healthy and being strong."

In addition to Kalil, receiver Rodney Smith, just promoted from the practice squad this week, is also listed as questionable with a hip injury. He isn't expected to play.

CB A.J. Jefferson (ankle) is listed as doubtful, meaning newly re-acquired CB Jacob Lacey, is expected to be active.

"We're probably going to have to activate him for this ballgame with A.J. being down," Frazier said. "The good thing is he has some familiarity with what we're doing on defense, so that helps a lot. But he'll be up and going this weekend."

Meanwhile, Peterson is among several players listed as probable and expected to play on Monday night. Peterson was experiencing tightness in his hamstring that had him limited on Thursday but not practicing on Friday. He returned to practice Saturday on a limited basis.

Also limited on Saturday were DE Jared Allen (ankle) and DT Kevin Williams (knee), both of whom are expected to play.

For the Giants, CB Jayron Hosley (hamstring) and RB David Wilson (neck) have been ruled out. RB Brandon Jacobs (hamstring), DE Jason Pieere-Paul (illness), TE Adrien Robinson (foot), DT Shaun Rogers (knee) and S Cooper Taylor (shoulder) were all listed as questionable.

Among those listed as questionable, Jacobs, Pieere-Paul and Rogers didn't participate.
