The Vikings have officially activated S Harrison Smith to 53-man roster, declaring him fit to play after suffering a severe case of turf toe on Oct. 13 against the Carolina Panthers.
But that was only one of several roster moves on a busy transaction Saturday for the team.
They had a spot open the 53-man roster after sending TE Kyle Rudolph to season-ending injured reserve earlier this week.
Smith said Friday there was no doubt in his mind that he would play Sunday, although head coach Leslie Frazier said he would be used in a rotational role at safety initially and not start. Jamarca Sanford and Andrew Sendejo will start.
But that was hardly the only roster move the Vikings made on Saturday.
Former starting CB Josh Robinson was placed on injured reserve with a fractured sternum and RB Joe Banyard was promoted from the practice squad. That is likely an indication that the Vikings have concerns about the availability of either Adrian Peterson (sprained foot) or Toby Gerhart (strained hamstring). Both of their top two running backs were listed as questionable on Friday's injury report and were limited in their first practice session of the week.
Peterson and Frazier both sounded optimistic about his prospects to play, but it would still be risk.
"I feel pretty confident. I feel pretty good. I'm excited I feel the way I do, based off the injury and the time I've had to kind of rejuvenate the body and rehab the foot to get the strength back," Peterson said on Friday.
"I've been kind of testing it out as far as putting weight on it all week. It's pain there, but it's at the point where you have to suck some of the pain up," Peterson said. "As far as me trying to put pressure on it, the pain that I do feel I'm able to take that. It's a different force when you're out there running and planting and really being explosive."
Gerhart was in wait-see-mode with his hamstring on Friday but called Peterson "Superman" with his ability to recover and play through pain.
To make up for the loss of Robinson, who hasn't played the last three weeks because of his chest injury, the Vikings promoted CB Robert Steeples from the practice squad. He has been with the Vikings since the second week of the season.
The Vikings also waived T Mike Remmers from the active roster after claiming him on waivers on Nov. 25.
