The Vikings placed TE John Carlson on injured reserve, prematurely ending his second season with the Vikings.
Carlson missed last Sunday's game with the Philadelphia Eagles because of a concussion suffered the previous week, but he had passed the NFL's post-concussion testing and practiced Wednesday. However, he wasn't feeling well after that practice and didn't participate the rest of this week. Head coach Leslie Frazier Carlson's setback likely was concussion-related.
It was the second concussion Carlson has suffered in two years with the Vikings, and at least the third of his career. He also had one documented concussion in the 2011 season with the Seattle Seahawks.
Frazier indicated on Friday that season-ending injured reserve was a possibility for Carlson.
"We've got to talk about it. We've just got to decide what's best for him, what's best for the club and see where he is when we get back and talk again (Saturday)," Frazier said.
Given his history of concussions, Carlson could consider retirement, but, as of Friday anyway, Frazier said he hadn't had that talk with Carlson.
"But I'm sure it's one we'll eventually have," he added.
That means the Vikings' top two tight ends entering the season, Carlson and Kyle Rudolph, both had their seasons ended early. Rudolph was placed on injured reserve on Dec. 9 after his fractured foot injury wasn't healing as quickly as initially hoped.
That leaves the Vikings with two tight ends on the roster – Rhett Ellison, who was inactive for four games because of injury, and Chase Ford, who was on the practice squad for the first six weeks of the season.
In addition to placing Carlson on injured reserve, the Vikings also waived CB Robert Steeples, who was promoted from the practice squad on Dec. 14 because of injuries in the secondary last week.
The Vikings promoted RB Joe Banyard and DE Justin Trattou to the active roster with the two openings created by the Carlson and Steeples moves.
