Vikings receiver Cordarrelle Patterson showed tremendous versatility during his rookie season, scoring on kickoff returns, receptions and rushes.
He didn't field a punt all season, but he will be asked to do that later this month as a replacement in the Pro Bowl for Antonio Brown, the Pittsburgh Steelers receiver who got more votes as a receiver and therefore will play that position in the Pro Bowl. Brown was voted to the Pro Bowl at both receiver and return specialist.
The Pro Bowl is Jan. 26.
Patterson made his initial mark this season on kickoff returns, leading the league with a 32.4-yard average, setting a franchise record with 1,393 kickoff return yards and returning two of them for touchdowns of 105 and an NFL-record 109 yards. In the only punt sent his way, Patterson called for a fair catch.
Despite that, Patterson finished fifth in fan voting as a punt returner, likely a nod toward his prowess in returning kickoffs, which won't be part of this year's Pro Bowl.
Patterson also emerged as an offensive threat in the second half of his rookie season. He had four receiving touchdowns and three rushing touchdowns to go with his two touchdowns on kickoff returns, becoming the only player in NFL history to accomplish that feat.
He finished the season with 12 rushes for 158 yards, and 45 catches for 469 yards.
Patterson and running back Adrian Peterson are the only Vikings to make the Pro Bowl this year. Patterson was also named Offensive Rookie of the Month for December and the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week in Week 8 after setting the NFL record with his 109-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
He is the seventh Vikings rookie all-time to be selected to the Pro Bowl, joining Chuck Foreman (1973), Randy Moss (1998), Peterson (2007), Percy Harvin (2009), Blair Walsh (2012) and Matt Kalil (2012).
