Injuries are leaving the South squad a bit depleted on the defensive side of the ball this week, with one torn ACL and an apparent ankle injury in the defensive backfield. Plus, who impressed and who struggled in Wednesday's practice?
An MRI performed Wednesday morning confirmed that Oklahoma
CB Aaron Colvin
suffered a torn right anterior cruciate ligament Tuesday when he went to cut inside and cover a receiver on a post route.
Colvin spent several minutes on the field and then on a training table having the injury looked at on Tuesday before getting the knee wrapped and braced and walking off under his own power but with a pronounced limp.
Surgery was scheduled for next week.
But he wasn't the only cornerback on the South squad to suffer an injury this week. Florida
's Jaylen Watkins
left practice with a bag of ice wrapped around his right ankle.
Prior to his injury Wednesday, Watkins picked up where he left off Tuesday, knocking down the first two passes thrown his way in one-on-one drills.
Other news and notes from the South squad:
Virginia DE Brent Urban sprained his ankle on Tuesday and is out for the rest of the week.
Eastern Illinois Jimmy Garappolo has an incredibly quick release, but he nearly threw an interception late in the second half of practice when one of his passes came out of his hand wobbly, which isn't a regular occurrence for him.
Among those working on punt returns for the South squad were Texas WR Mike Davis and Florida WR Solomon Patton.
Davis made a nice adjustment on an underthrown pass over the middle of the field, undercutting the defender and high-pointing the pass for the catch. He later put an inside move on Georgia Southern CB Lavelle Westbrooks.
Florida State LB Telvin Smith and Georgia Tech LB Jerry Attaochu both dropped passes during individual drills. Smith had an up-and-down session during one-on-one work. He was beaten badly on a double move trying to cover Auburn FB Jay Prosch but later easily handled all the moves that a tight tried to put on him.
Prosch is a quality lead blocker and also has very soft hands. He's a throwback fullback, a dying breed in today's NFL, but his ability as a receiver will help him in the eyes of scouts.
Coastal Carolina RB Taliaferro Lorenzo showed good feet handling the blitzes of linebackers during one-on-one work, but later in practice he fumbled the ball without ever being touched after taking a handoff.
Florida State S Terrence Brooks played a good trail technique covering tight ends in one-on-one work.
Tulane WR Ryan Grant displayed impressive separation ability, pulling away from Westbrooks and hauling in a perfectly thrown 40-yard pass down from Derek Carr down the right sideline.
Utah CB Keith McGill struggled with what appeared to be cramps several times in Wednesday's practice.
Vanderbilt safety Kenny Ladler had a nice diving pass broken up on an out route from Alabama WR Kevin Norwood.
Oregon WR Josh Huff will serve as the main kick returner for the South team. He returned kicks in college and in high school.
California DT DeAndre Coleman had a very good practice. During run drills, he had two plays in which he penetrated into the backfield and picked up a tackle for loss. He also showed good speed, tracking a ball carrier down the line and tackling him outside the numbers.
Florida WR Solomon Patton struggled on Tuesday but looked much better today. He demonstrated top-tier speed and quickness. His acceleration out of his breaks could give NFL nickel backs fits.
Georgia TE Arthur Lynch looked very good as a pass blocker and showed very quick feet.
BYU OLB Kyle Van Noy is a strong pass rusher and can hold his own against the run, yet he struggled mightily in coverage.
Virginia T Morgan Moses worked at left tackle and showed quick feet, mirroring defenders well off the edge.
Alabama OLB Adrian Hubbard played in a 3-4 in college but he may not be fast enough to play the same position in the pros. He's strong against the run and has the body type and skill set to fit well as a 4-3 defensive end.
North Dakota State OT Billy Turner is a very powerful player and can maul in the run game but he hasn't shown much agility this week.
