Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said he expects star running back Adrian Peterson to be ready for a pre-draft minicamp in mid to late April after Peterson had surgery to repair his adductor muscle and also had a compartmental release in late January.
"He's doing great. I got a report from Eric (Sugarman) yesterday and he said he's doing great – better than they expected and should be great to go," Zimmer said Friday at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
Dr. Williams Meyers at the Vincera Institute in Philadelphia performed the surgery and deemed it a success at the time. The recovery time was expected to be about six weeks.
Peterson struggled with his groin injury for most of the second half of the 2013 season, missing the final two games and deciding not to play in the Pro Bowl because of it.
Peterson finished the 2013 season with 1,266 yards after getting a franchise record 2,097 yards rushing in 2012, which came up four yards short of the NFL single-season record. In the final four games, he rushed only 18 times and missed two of those games because of the injuries.
Despite the groin injury, a sport hernia that limited him in the second half of the 2012 season and a torn anterior cruciate ligament in December 2011, Zimmer indicated he has no concerns about Peterson wearing down.
Peterson turns 29 on March 21.
"This guy isn't an average 28- or 29-year-old back. This guy is special and some of the things, when (the Bengals) were fixin' to play him, some of the things that I thought, I watched him and I was like, ‘Wow, if we're not really good in the way we line up and contain and be in the right positions, we're going to have a hard, hard day.' He could have been 20 months old for all I care."
Peterson missed 17 of the 33 final practices in 2013 once the injuries started in October. He was limited in seven additional practices.
