VIDEO: Peterson assesses the opener

Adrian Peterson talks about the home opener, playing outdoors, the offensive execution, Cordarrelle Patterson and Peterson’s self-assessment of his first game of 2014.

Adrian Peterson was happy to get a win in the season opener, but he’s hoping for better execution from the offense, including himself, in the home opener against the New England Patriots at TCF Bank Stadium Sunday.

He addressed several issues on Thursday:

On getting a fresh start at home at TCF Bank Stadium: “Yeah, it is. Home opener, new stadium. We’re here for two years. One thing we talked about is really establishing our home turf advantage. This is our home turf for two years so making sure we’re getting W’s when we’re playing at home. This is going to be a big challenge for us and we’re looking forward to it.”

On how Miami moved the ball against the Patriots in the running game: “They play physical ball. They were able to run the ball and pass the ball. Anytime you’re able to be balanced, that always helps. And they executed.”

On what stood out positively and negatively against the St. Louis Rams: “On the positive, I felt like we were able to do some good things offensively. We was able to execute in the pass game. In the run game we were pretty efficient as well. On the negative side, just eliminating penalties, making sure we’re taking good care of the ball and doing a lot better on third-down situations. I don’t know the numbers, but we really didn’t accomplish that goal, that percentage we set for ourselves as far as third-down efficiency. So we came into this week pointing those things out early and making sure we address them early in the week in our preparation and just improving this week for the next opponent.”

On Cordarrelle Patterson running the ball: “It’s pretty exciting. He’s a young guy, and he’s steadily improving. He comes out and practices hard but to see him have success is what it’s all about. To see other guys get involved is what I’ve been looking for for a long time. It’s a breath of fresh air.”
