Vikings fans got the ‘over’ for wins

The Vikings needed their final win of the season go ‘over’ the Las Vegas preseason projection.

It seems like an annual ritual for Minnesota Vikings fans. They often feel their team is disrespected, discredited and undervalued from the preseason projections.

The beauty of the system, however, is that every team in the NFL has the chance to write their story during the season and discredit the forward written by the “experts” in the media and the odds-makers in Las Vegas.

This year might have produced the most requests thrown this way along the lines of, “What do you think of the Vikings’ chances?” and, “They should be better than the 5½ or 6½ wins the bookmakers are projecting, right?”

Of course, most of those questions were coming in May, June and July. The first few weeks of the season encapsulated the highs and lows that would follow. The Vikings played a solid game against the Rams in their season-opening win, but in the 10 days following that the turmoil, Adrian Peterson’s legal situation began, eventually leading to his loss for the rest of the season.

Despite losing Peterson – along with offensive starters in QB Matt Cassel, guard Brandon Fusco and right tackle Phil Loadholt for the season and tight end Kyle Rudolph for much of the season – the Vikings managed to win seven games, a two-game improvement over 2013.

The Vikings’ over-under win total was placed at 6½ by the gambling site Bovada.lv before the season began and their season-ending win against the Bears put them over that total, despite the personnel losses.

They were one of 19 teams to go “over” the win total projected by Las Vegas odds-makers.

The Cowboys and Cardinals were two of the biggest over-achieving NFL teams this year while the Buccaneers and Titans were the biggest under-achievers, according to the preseason projections from Bovada.
