Reports: Peterson, Vikings to meet in Texas

Adrian Peterson and the Vikings are meeting in Texas on Wednesday to try to smooth the relationship, according to multiple reports.

Two key members of the Minnesota Vikings staff will be meeting with Adrian Peterson in Texas, according to multiple reports.

Head coach Mike Zimmer and general manager Rick Spielman are among the key team personnel involved in the meeting with Peterson and his wife, Ashley, according to ESPN.

Peterson told ESPN last month that if the decision to return to the Vikings was up to his wife, he wouldn’t because of how Ashley felt the family was unfairly treated in Minnesota while Adrian’s legal battle was ongoing as he fought child abuse charges in Texas (he eventually pleaded no contest to misdemeanor reckless assault).

Peterson remains under contract with the Vikings, with scheduled salaries of $12.75 million in 2015, $14.75 million in 2016 and $17.75 million in 2017, the final year of his contract. But the greatest immediate issue is resolving the hard feelings Peterson has for the organization.

He told ESPN he was “uneasy” about a return to the Vikings because he didn’t feel all the members of the organization fully supported him during his legal battle that resulted in him missing the final 15 games of the season while he was either on the Commissioner’s Exempt List or suspended by the league.

Both Zimmer and Spielman have been public of their support for Peterson’s return to the team when he is eligible following an ongoing legal battle with the NFL over his reinstatement.

“I haven’t changed any from my support of Adrian since he got suspended,” Zimmer said at the NFL Scouting Combine last month. “It’s still important for me that Adrian does all the things he’s supposed to do as far as the things mandated by the league. But also him becoming a better person in that aspect. All the other things, in my opinion he’s a pretty darn good person. As I’ve said before, we all make mistakes and he made one and he’s admitted to it and we go from there. I’m hopeful that he’s back with us. I think that people will realize that and remember all the good things that he’s done throughout his career and not just on the football field either.”

Spielman reiterated his support for Peterson on Monday at the Minnesota Gophers pro day.

“I don’t want to sit here and give you guys a blow-by-blow every day,” Spielman said of Peterson’s situation on Monday. “I think it’s been very clearly stated that we want Adrian Peterson back. There’s no question about the talent. He’s a unique talent and he’s under contract with us.”
