Bill Musgrave is the offensive coordinator for the Raiders and he has plenty of experience with Ponder. He was the offensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings in 2011, which is the year they drafted Christian Ponder with the No. 12 overall pick. Musgrave remained as the Vikings offensive coordinator until 2013 before being let go by new head coach Mike Zimmer.
In his four seasons with the Vikings, Ponder held a 14-21-1 record. He also completed 59.8% of his passes and threw for 6,658 yards, 38 touchdowns ad 36 interceptions.
In 2014, Ponder began the season as the third-string quarterback, but due to injuries to Matt Cassel and Teddy Bridgewater he found himself to be a starter for a game. That game came in the Week 5 blowout loss to the Green Bay Packers.
At the beginning of the offseason, Ponder said that he wanted to go somewhere he could compete for a starting job. However, that is not in Oakland, as they have a young and talented quarterback in Derek Carr, who was drafted four spots after Bridgewater.
The Raiders will play the Vikings in Oakland during the 2015 season, but the date still has to be determined. Ponder will likely be the backup quarterback for that game unless there is an injury to Carr.
