Vikings visiting with S Taylor Mays

The Vikings are bringing in another defender familiar with Mike Zimmer’s scheme.

The Vikings are bringing in another defender familiar with Mike Zimmer’s scheme. Minnesota Vikings officials are having dinner with free-agent safety Taylor Mays on Wednesday night with a more extensive visit on Thursday, according to NFL Media.

May was with Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer with the Cincinnati Bengals from 2011-13, where he started four games over those three seasons when Zimmer was the defensive coordinator.

Mays was originally a draft choice of the San Francisco 49ers out of USC in 2010. With the 49ers for only one season, he started a career-high six games, registering a career-high 38 tackles and adding two passes defensed. In his final season in Cincinnati, he had a career-high three passes defensed, but he still doesn’t have an interception in his five seasons in the league.

He played in all 16 games last year for the Bengals but didn’t start a game.

Harrison Smith firmly holds down one starting job for the Vikings, but Robert Blanton started the first 13 games beside Smith before giving way to Andrew Sendejo for the final three starts of the season.

Mays might not win a starting job with the Vikings, but he would likely add depth and contribute on special teams.
