In-depth stats comparison: Caution on Parker?

An in-depth comparison of the receiving statistics in numerous categories shows the same leader, but a big re-ordering of the generally accepted top 10.

If the Minnesota Vikings are going to spend the 11th overall pick on a wide receiver, they’ll want to review this chart comparing the top 10 receivers.

Amari Cooper remains atop the perch, based on this in-depth comparison using numerous statistics, but the order changes after that.

Every NFL draft analyst seems to have the same top three receivers in the Class of 2015 – Cooper, Kevin White and DeVante Parker. But a longer look at the stats – you know, what they actually did on the field and measured by more than just catches and yards – reveals a different top three.

Parker has often been connected with the Vikings and their first-round pick, but while he ranked second or third in a few statistical categories, he ranked eighth in scoring opportunities and eighth in reception consistency. That dropped him to sixth overall in the final statistical report card from the NFL’s lead scout, Dave-Te’ Thomas and his staff of scouts.

After Cooper, it’s Devin Smith, who endured three starting quarterbacks during Ohio State’s run to the National Championship, who proved to the be the winner in three categories measured by Thomas. In statistical comparisons with 10 of the top receivers, Smith led in big plays, reception consistency and “going the distance,” giving Smith second place overall on the comparison report card.

USC’s Nelson Agholor ranked second in one receptions chart and second in scoring opportunities to place third overall.

What about White? The big West Virginia receiver placed fifth overall.

This doesn’t necessarily change the draft rankings of some of the receivers, but it should give teams a reason to make sure their assessments are on point after a look at the in-depth statistics. But it does show the depth of the receiver class, along with the strengths of each of those in the top 10.

Here is the story of the stats from the numerous comparison charts assemble by Thomas’ team of scouts:

Class of 2015: COMPARING THE WIDE RECEIVERS
These charts compare the performances of the top-rated receivers eligible for the 2015 draft, using their 2014 season statistics for this project. Each of the players listed below are considered to be early-round draft selections. Because Oklahoma’s Dorial Green-Beckham did not play in 2014, he was not included in this report. I examine each athlete’s performance in detailed pass catching categories, based on game averages or percentage of passes caught.
