Minnesota Vikings guard Brandon Fusco is still working through the NFL’s post-concussion protocol.
Fusco “practiced some” on Thursday, a day after he was held out of practice altogether, but he wasn’t allowed to speak with reporters after practice. That’s standard practice for a player still in the post-concussion routine.
“It’s a work in progress,” head coach Mike Zimmer said of Fusco clearing all the steps in the program before he can return to a full, regular routine.
Fusco appears to have suffered the injury on the final play of the third quarter of Sunday’s game against the Detroit Lions. Toward the end of the play, he fell to his knees and appeared to be dazed, but NFL spotters didn’t pull him from the game and he told Viking Update after the game he was “good.” At that point, he was allowed to speak to reporters because the concussion hadn’t been diagnosed.
“I just took a shot to the chin,” he said then. “(Lions linebacker Stephen) Tulloch hit me good. He’s not the biggest guy, but he packs a punch.”
Zimmer said he feels good about his plan if Fusco can’t go, and it appears it would be Jeremiah Sirles filling in for Fusco at left guard if he isn’t cleared to play by Sunday.
The Vikings traded for Sirles on Sept. 5 as NFL rosters were cut down to 53 players. Ironically, the Vikings acquired Sirles from the San Diego Chargers, whom the Vikings play on Sunday.
“He’s a big guy, keeps his feet moving. Athletic. He’s got some toughness to him,” Zimmer said.
Sirles has practiced at all three offensive line positions since joining the Vikings.
