The Minnesota Vikings will be short on receivers in the passing game and defensive backs to defend the Denver Broncos’ passing game.
That’s the takeaway from Friday at Winter Park, as several injured Vikings were unable to practice for the third straight day.
On offense, the most impactful injury is starting receiver Charles Johnson, who suffered a rib injury in the first quarter of last Sunday’s win over the San Diego Chargers. Johnson returned to the game for one series before having his helmet taken away from him. That’s been his status the entire week of practice, too.
Jarius Wright was also injured in the game, but he was limited in Friday’s practice after sitting out on Wednesday and Thursday. With his right wrist and hand taped, he went was at least involved in Friday’s practice.
“I think I missed days for just precautionary reasons, just to let it heal up a little bit,” Wright said. “But after it happened in the game, I was able to catch passes so I don’t know if will really affect my pass-catching that much, even though it is my hand.”
Although he isn’t considered a starter, Wright has 10 targets and five catches this season while Johnson has eight targets and six catches.
Wright said he thought the injury happened when he caught a pass, but he was never told anything was broken.
“I just know at some point it was really hurting and I was like, ‘I need to get this checked out,’” he said.
Wright said he is optimistic he will play, but he isn’t sure which way head coach Mike Zimmer was leaning.
If Johnson and/or Wright can’t go, it could signal increased playing time for Adam Thielen and Cordarrelle Patterson in the offense. Thielen has played in 30 offensive snaps this season and Patterson just 16.
“I just really sit back and just wait on my number being called,” Patterson said. “Whatever coach needs (from) me and whatever they say, I’ve just got to make sure I’m ready. With those guys out, it might mean my opportunity will come, but you never know. You’ve just got to sit back and wait on my number.”
Rookie Stefon Diggs could also see his first time on the active list.
“These guys have been running the offense for a long time,” Zimmer said of his backup receivers. “They’re smart guys. They know what to do.”
Cornerback Jabari Price was added to the injury report on Thursday with a shoulder injury, but he hasn’t been active for a game yet as he just returned from a two-game suspension. The bigger issue in the defensive backfield is with safety Andrew Sendejo, who suffered a left knee injury in Sunday’s game and was replaced by former starter Robert Blanton. Sendejo hasn’t practiced all week.
