Minnesota Vikings’ defenders Harrison Smith, Anthony Barr ruled out

The Vikings are trying to get some of their better defenders back from injury, but it has been a struggle.

The Minnesota Vikings defense will short-handed once again.

After practicing on a limited basis on Wednesday and Thursday, safety Harrison Smith only stretched at the start of Friday’s practice before heading off the practice field, presumably to receive treatment on his ailing hamstring and knee, and has been ruled out for Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears. So is linebacker Anthony Barr, who appeared to give it a try on Friday before being ruled out.

“There’s no setback, just not quite where I wanted it to be,” Smith said.

Nose tackle Linval Joseph and defensive end Everson Griffen, neither of whom practiced earlier this week, were limited on Friday and listed as questionable for the Bears game.

In addition to Smith and Barr, the Vikings also ruled out a couple of backups, receiver Charles Johnson, who was added to the injury report Thursday because of an ankle injury, and defensive end Scott Crichton with a concussion and neck injury.

Head coach Mike Zimmer said the playoffs being on the horizon aren’t a consideration when deciding to sit or play guys that are hurt, and Smith said that’s the case with him, too.

“That’s kind of what everybody else has said to me, but I really don’t,” Smith said. “I want to play as soon as I can. That’s all I want to do.”

Rookie Anthony Harris, who started for Smith last week, could get his second start, this time alongside Andrew Sendejo, who was limited with a knee injury on Wednesday but practiced fully on Thursday and was practicing again on Friday. He is listed as probable, along with reserve safety Robert Blanton (knee). Backup linebacker Brandon Watts (rib) is also probable.

Rookie Edmond Robinson appears to be in a line for another start for Barr, and Sharrif Floyd has been sliding to nose tackle for Joseph with Tom Johnson playing the three-technique.

The Bears issued their injury report around noon, listing WR Alshon Jeffery (calf), LB Pernell McPhee (knee), TE Zach Miller, CB Tracy Porter. DL Will Sutton and CB Sherrick McManis all as questionable.

Bears CB Bryce Callahan (quadricep) is listed as doubtful.
