Linval Joseph returns, Adrian Peterson sits

Nose tackle Linval Joseph returned to practice Wednesday, but Adrian Peterson sat out.

The Minnesota Vikings are expected to be as full strength as they’ve been in quite some time for their wild card matchup against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.

Nose tackle Linval Joseph returned to practice on a limited basis Wednesday after being inactive for four of the last five games, including last Sunday night against the Green Bay Packers.

Joseph has been dealing with a toe injury for more than a month. He played against the New York Giants, his former team, on Dec. 27 but also left that game briefly.

Head coach Mike Zimmer said he was hopeful Joseph would be able to play on Sunday and his status in Wednesday’s practice reinforces that hope. However, Zimmer said he didn’t rest Joseph on Sunday to save him for the playoffs.

“It didn't factor at all. I mean, if he could have played he would have played,” Zimmer said.

“… After the game he played (against the Giants) it was sore and swollen. Just took a little time.”

Joseph’s expected return to the lineup should help the Vikings defense as it tries to contain Seattle running back Marshawn Lynch, who is expected to play after missing the last seven games. Prior to that, however, Lynch was averaging just 3.8 yards per carry and had only one 100-yard game in seven games played this season.

The Vikings were without Adrian Peterson at Wednesday’s outdoor practice after he entered last week’s game with ankle and shoulder injuries and added a lower back injury to his medical chart Sunday night. Peterson said Sunday night it didn’t matter what percent of his health he had, he is going to play in the Vikings’ first playoff game since the 2012 postseason. Zimmer also said Sunday night that Peterson would be fine, and X-rays on his back and spine taken during the game were negative.

In Wednesday’s injury report, the ankle and shoulder injuries were scrubbed and he was listed with only a low back injury.

Joining Peterson as non-participants in Wednesday’s practice were nose tackle Kenrick Ellis (ankle) and fullback Zach Line (illness).
