Fan forum: Vikings fans love Zimmer

Fans we polled at training camp were unanimous in their support of the Minnesota Vikings giving Mike Zimmer an extension.

Just prior to the opening of training camp, the Minnesota Vikings signed head coach Mike Zimmer to a contact extension after only two seasons with the team. While details of the extension weren’t released, there is no doubt Viking fans gave the move a thumbs-up.

Here is what fans had to say when Viking Update asked for their reaction during training camp:

“I think most people are pretty excited about it and I am too. I think he’s the right guy. There is a lot of promise after last year and there is a lot to hope for this year too.”
– Mark Kerr, Maple Grove, Minn.

“It’s an excellent move. He’s what we need to hold the players accountable. He’s a very likable guy and they seem to listen to him. He kind of plays that father-figure role that these young men need.”
– Missy Bighley, Minneapolis, Minn.

“It was an excellent move. He just has the right demeanor and has the atmosphere moving in the right direction. The players respect him and do what he wants. The first time I saw him at camp a few years ago, I could see an immediate difference in how he ran things. I love his discipline.”
– Dave Hutchins, Winona, Minn.

“It was a great move. You don’t want his contract to run out and some other team making him an offer. It was right to extend it and make sure he didn’t get away.”
– Alex Olson, Brooklyn Park, Minn.

“It was a great move because he’s a great coach. I like the fact he’s a defensive-minded coach. He has a lot of control over the team and the players, and he does a great job coaching the game.”
– Cory Vincent, Minneapolis

“I like it. He has come in and he’s very strong. He’s made our defense very strong. He is a very good coach. I like it.”
– Oscar Lemus, Mexico City, Mexico

“I hope it’s good. He’s done a great job so far. They were tough to watch with (Brad) Childress and (Leslie) Frazier. I enjoy watching them now. They’re tougher. They are accountable. It’s just a much more enjoyable team to watch.”
– Ross Flemmer, Dell Rapids, S.D.

“I like the move. He works the players really hard and he wants them to succeed.”
– Connie Pleiss, Minneapolis

“It was a good move. He gives us a lot of good leadership and he has us going in the right direction.”
– Philip Johannsen, Plymouth, Minn.

“I was actually pretty happy about it. I think he’s a very good asset for the Vikings. I know that he jells really well with the players and he demands respect. That’s why they play well for him because he doesn’t give them an option. He puts his foot down and that’s the way it’s going to be. That’s what they need. They need tough love and guidance and they have a good bond with him.”
– “Touchdown” Terri Solem, Duluth, Minn.

“I love Coach Zimmer. He holds the guys accountable. He’s obviously helped because we won the division last year. I’m happy he’s going to be around longer.”
– Jamie Ortega, Aurora, Ill.

“He did a decent job last year and got us to the playoffs, but this team still needs to build the chemistry around Adrian Peterson to be able to go to the next level. Coach Zimmer needs to focus on that. We need to keep the offense and defense moving forward. I’m glad they gave him more years, but I was surprised they didn’t wait until sometime during the season.”
– Jon Diedrickson, Council Bluffs, Iowa

“I think it was a great move by Rick Spielman. All the fans think he’s fantastic and that he’s leading us in the right direction. I love his attitude and his demeanor. Last season, we were banged up and he still found a way to make things work. We’re adding depth and getting things the way he wants it.”
– Tony Weldon, Overland Park, Kan.

“With his coaching style, I think it’s a great fit for the Vikings. He keeps everybody in line. He does it his way and everybody respects him for it. It’s great we finally have that in a coach. When the players love a coach and listen to him, it’s a great scenario.”
– Andrew Spooner, Duluth, Minn.

“Oh gosh, he’s proven everything. He’s amazing, especially in comparison to some of the last coaches we’ve had. When players are coming here to play for him and not necessarily for what they are getting paid, that says a lot.”
– Eric Thulander, Huntington Beach, Calif.

“That was a great decision. It’s going to work out well for the Vikings. He’s got a pretty solid football mind on what he wants to do. He keeps control on the field. Last season was a great year, but we are really jelled for this year and we will do great.”
– Jeff Miles, Mankato, Minn.

“It was a great decision. He’s a great coach. He’s not just a player’s coach. He’s strict and the players listen to him and they obviously respond well to his structure.”
– Jayme Trygstad, Volga, S.D.

“I love the decision. What’s there not to like about it. He’s a proven winner. He’s no nonsense. He’s made a commitment to this organization and these players and I’m glad the Vikings acknowledged that.”
– Hank Russell, Bloomington, Minn.

“Zim is awesome. I love him. He’s a great coach. They are getting the right players. I’m not sure exactly what he’s responsible for with that, but it’s obvious he’s the right guy.”
– Dustin Thuftedal, Clear Lake, Minn.

“It’s an excellent move. The guy is the best coach we’ve had in years and, in fact, he’s one of the best in the league right now. Look what he’s done for the team and how far they’ve come. They respect him and he’s got them playing very well. What more can you ask for?”
– Roger Garcia, Woodbury, Minn.

“I think it was a great move. I like his stature and the way he coaches. He kind of reminds me of Bud Grant in a way and I think he could be a long-time coach here.”
– Terry Jacobs, Apple Valley, Minn.
