Notebook: Minnesota Vikings QB decision made, Jerick McKinnon injury

Mike Zimmer is staying true to his desire to keep the Minnesota Vikings’ quarterback situation under wraps.

After a week of practice for Sam Bradford, Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer wasn’t willing to say which of the two quarterbacks on his active roster, Shaun Hill or Bradford, would be starting the season opener Sunday against the Tennessee Titans.

“I guess we’ll find out Sunday,” Zimmer said after Friday’s practice.

About four hours later, says they have the answer.

Hill has a year-plus in Norv Turner’s offensive scheme but completed only 2 of 7 passes last year behind starter Teddy Bridgewater. The in-practice injury to Bridgewater on Aug. 30 left the Vikings without their starter for the 2016 season less than two weeks before the regular-season opener. Bridgewater had surgery to multiple ligaments in his left knee on Thursday, leaving him to focus on rehabilitation rather than game-planning for opponents.

His injury prompted the Vikings to trade for Bradford last Saturday, giving him a week to prepare for Sunday’s opener.

Zimmer said Friday he had decided on his starting quarterback but was hoping to keep that information under wraps. However, there were indications during the week that Hill was getting more time with the starters.

It has been a whirlwind 10 days for the Vikings since Bridgewater’s injury, but Zimmer said the mood of the team is “fine.”

“Most teams are pretty resilient with things; they understand things happen throughout the course of a season,” he said. “So there’s been, obviously, some mood swings, but I think they’re good.

The Vikings will be without TE MyCole Pruitt and backup center Nick Easton, and starting wide receiver Charles Johnson and backup running back Jerick McKinnon are questionable for Sunday’s game.

“He should be fine,” Zimmer said of McKinnon, noting that the injury report this year has changed to eliminate the “probable” designation.
