Griffen was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week after the defensive end produced three sacks and nine quarterback hurries in a Week 3 win over the Carolina Panthers. It was the second time Griffen has won the award in the last year, winning it in the 2015 season-finale win over the Green Bay Packers.
LB Eric Kendricks won the award after a Week 1 win over the Tennessee Titans, WR Stefon Diggs won the offensive player of the week award after a Week 2 win over the Packers, and Griffen’s award on Wednesday made it three straight weeks for the Vikings winning one of the NFC’s three weekly awards for offense, defense or special teams.
Griffen is tied for second in the NFL with five sacks in 2016 and has the fourth-most sacks (26.5) since the start of the 2014 season. It is the third time in his career Griffen had three sacks in a single game (Green Bay, 12/30/12; and Buffalo, 10/19/14).
Griffen represents the 10th player of the week award earned in the past three seasons under Mike Zimmer and the sixth defensive player to earn the honor.
