Field repairs prior Minnesota–Arizona game
Problems with the Metrodome's turf prompted the Arizona Cardinals to ask the NFL to consider postponing Thursday night's preseason game against the Minnesota Vikings, but it went on as scheduled after minor repairs.
Workers were on the field before the game fixing at least three gaps between sections of the turf around the south end zone, which sits over the infield when the stadium is used for baseball.
Veteran Blake takes beating against Minnesota
Arizona quarterback Jeff Blake left Thursday night's exhibition game at Minnesota with a mild concussion after being sacked by Vikings tackle Chris Hovan.
On the first play from scrimmage, Hovan beat his man and wrapped up Blake, who appeared to hit his head on the turf. He stayed on the ground a few moments before being helped to the sidelines.
X-rays negative, but Eagles first-round pick hurting
Eagles first-round pick Jerome McDougle left Thursday night's game against the New York Jets with a left hip and ankle injury.
X-rays were negative, but McDougle will have an MRI on Friday.
He was injured when he collided with a teammate while chasing Jets quarterback Todd Husak in the third quarter.
Who can shoulder the load in Detroit?
Detroit Lions running back James Stewart separated his right shoulder in the first quarter of Thursday night's preseason game against the Buffalo Bills.
It was not determined how long he will be out.
Stewart, who led the Lions with 1,021 yards rushing last season, was hurt when he was hit at the line of scrimmage by Bills safety Coy Wire and then tackled from behind by three other defenders
Lightning delays start to Green Bay–Tennessee game
The football game between the Green Bay Packers and Tennessee Titans was delayed for more than 2-1/2 hours by lightning and a torrential downpour Thursday night.
Packers president Bob Harlan said police estimated about 40 percent of the nearly 70,000 fans waited out the delay. But the crowd appeared much smaller when play resumed at 11:01 p.m. CDT after a delay of 2 hours, 33 minutes.
Jaguars outlast Redskins in final preseason warm-up
Jacksonville defeated the Washington Redskins 17-15 in the final exhibition game. Redskins coach Steve Spurrier gave many of his veterans the night off, including LaVar Arrington, Lavernaues Coles and Trung Canidate. Yet even by exhibition-season standards, Washington (1-3) played poorly.
Rookie quarterback shines in Ravens loss
Kyle Boller turned in a spectacular performance in his final audition for the role as starting quarterback of the Baltimore Ravens. Boller, the 19th overall pick in the 2003 draft, gained the upper hand in his duel with four-year veteran Chris Redman for the right to start the Sept. 7 opener at Pittsburgh.
Starting in a second straight preseason game, Boller went 7-for-9 for 99 yards before leaving in the second quarter with Baltimore up 17-0.
