Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer has eye surgery, might not coach Thursday

The Minnesota Vikings’ latest injury setback is with head coach Mike Zimmer.

Minnesota Vikings coach Mike Zimmer is having emergency eye surgery Wednesday night, putting his status for their Thursday night game against the Dallas Cowboys in doubt, the Vikings said in a statement issued Wednesday night.

General manager Rick Spielman called Zimmer’s status for the game “uncertain.”

“I have met with the coaches and players and we have a contingency plan in place if Mike is unable to coach against Dallas,” Spielman said in the statement.

Zimmer had eye surgery four weeks ago to repair a torn retina in his right eye, but returned after the surgery to watch film for the Vikings’ next game. He said doctors told him then that there was a possibility he could go blind in the eye if he didn’t have surgery then. A week later, he had another procedure and later said he had a total of six needles in his eye over the two surgeries.

The Vikings will discuss the situation in a conference call with reporters on Thursday morning.
