Minnesota Vikings set to lose Matt Kalil to Carolina Panthers

The Minnesota Vikings appear set to lose out on another key left tackle target – their own – in Matt Kalil.

The Minnesota Vikings’ search for a quality tackle in free agency will continue, but early Thursday morning ESPN reported that Matt Kalil is expected to join his brother Ryan as a member of the Carolina Panthers.

Kalil was an unrestricted free agent and has honed in on a contract with the Panthers during the three-day negotiating period. The Vikings were believed to be involved in the negotiations with Kalil, but the contract from the Panthers and the pull of playing with his brother, the Pro Bowl starting center for the Panthers, brought together their reunion.

Kalil had said he would welcome a return to the Vikings, but the decision came down to the two teams and can officially be announced when the free-agent signing period opens at 3 p.m.

Kalil missed all but the first two games of the 2016 season with a hip injury.

The Vikings were also interested in Baltimore Ravens tackle Ricky Wagner, but he is set to sign with the Detroit Lions when free agency opens.
