Minnesota Vikings 2017 schedule starts with Saints, ends with Bears

As the NFL regular-season schedule is released, the Minnesota Vikings will open at home on Monday night and close at home on New Years Eve.

The Minnesota Vikings could have another very intriguing season opener in 2017 as the full NFL schedule was announced on Thursday night.

The Vikings open with the New Orleans Saints at U.S. Bank Stadium on Monday Night Football. The last time they met the Saints in the season opener was in 2010, a follow-up to the 2009 NFC Championship Game and they lost the “revenge” game, as well, 14-9, in Brett Favre’s final NFL season.

This time around, the Vikings could be playing against Adrian Peterson, who visited the Saints recently but left without a contract and is expected to remain a free agent until after the NFL draft next week. But Minnesota playing against Peterson could be just the hook that Monday Night Football is looking for in the first of double-header night if that happens.

In 2015, the Vikings also opened on Monday Night Football, the second game of the night and the final game of Week 1, and it wasn’t a pretty look. They lost 20-3 in San Francisco to a team that wasn’t expected to do much and didn’t. The Vikings still finished with an 11-5 record.

While Mike Zimmer gets his team to open the season at home, they also finished there with a New Year’s Eve noon game against the NFC North rival Chicago Bears on Dec. 31.

They will have one other holiday game in Detroit on Thanksgiving, the second straight season they travel to Detroit on Thanksgiving.

In addition opening on Monday night, the Vikings’ Week 5 game at Chicago is a Monday nighter and at Green Bay on Dec. 23 is a Saturday night game.
