Vikings' Interest In Others Varied
Below is a list of players the Vikings were rumored to have an interest in before signing Marcus Robinson and getting ready to call it good for big-name free agency. Here is what the Vikings were saying about those free agents before the Marcus Robinson signing.
On WR Marcus Robinson (signed yesterday) – "We had Marcus in for an interview and workout. He is in good shape and healthy. The way he played in the second half of the season with the Baltimore Ravens was just an indication of how good a receiver he is. We are talking with his representative and we'll see where the discussions go."
On WR Darren Jackson (before the Robinson signing) – "We haven't had him come in at this time, as we have been busy working on deals with a couple other players and he has been on the road. Jackson is a player we may look at, especially if we go in a different direction at the wide receiver position."
On LB Ian Gold – "We have some interest in Gold, but he is not a priority for us. It is our understanding he seeks a long-term deal at a very high salary. Our thoughts are this is a player coming off major knee surgery, we are not very comfortable extending that type of offer."
On LB Isaiah Kacyvenski (re-signed with Seattle) – "Kacyvenski is the type of player we may want to add to the roster. He can help us with the depth issue at linebacker, as well as being a solid contributor on special teams. Kacyvenski is the type of linebacker that fits into that hard-nosed, old-style player, really the type that fits who we are. We are in discussions with Kacyvenski."
On DE Bert Berry (who has since signed with Arizona over the weekend) – "When we evaluated our defensive end position, we thought we could improve this area of the team, if a player was available that was versatile. Right now, we are fairly one-dimensional at the position, either we play the run (Kenny Mixon) or we rush the quarterback (Lance Johnstone). Berry may play the run a bit better than Johnstone, but not enough to be a significant factor at the position. We view them as being pretty similar players. We are not going to go in that direction. With Jevon Kearse and Grant Wistrom off the board, the defensive ends are not nearly as enticing to us."
