Vikes Cut Bates, Brewer

Before the 2003 season, the Vikings had high hopes for both D'Wayne Bates and Jack Brewer. Less than a year later, both have been released by the Vikings.

The Vikings didn't mince words in a statement announcing the release of wide receiver D'Wayne Bates and safety Jack Brewer. The announcement was simply titled "roster moves" and listed Bates and Brewer by name.

While the team didn't specify reasons, VU had heard from team sources that both were likely coming. With the signing of Marcus Robinson and emergence of Nate Burleson and Kelly Campbell, it became obvious that Bates was likely going to be the team's fifth receiver. With the signing of safety and special teamer Tyrone Carter, the same was likely true for Brewer.

VU has been told that, because of their good relationships with the coaches, the Vikings released both players now to give them a chance to sign on elsewhere as opposed to making them fight uphill battles in training camp and reduce their chances of hooking on with a new team.
