Bo Jackson may have known pro baseball and football, but Mewelde Moore is no Bo Jackson.
In his first interview as a Viking, Moore was asked baseball questions -- his college tuition was paid by the San Diego Padres, as well as a tight signing bonus. One pre-draft source claimed his signing bonus was in excess of $800,000. VU pushed the question and was told it was "only" $250,000.
While Moore's baseball days are over, his signing bonus days aren't. VU has been told the details of Moore's contract, which include a $400,000 signing bonus (actually $394,000 for you bean counters out there).
Outside of the bonus, his four-year deal calls for league-mandated minimums -- $230,000 this year, $305,000 in 2005, $385,000 in 2006 and $460,000 in 2007.
The Vikings are obviously optimistic about Moore's contribution to the team and, by getting him signed early, can integrate him into the offense in a hurry. Don't expect to see Moore rolling up to Winter Park in a AMC Pacer. He's learned to enjoy signing bonuses already.
