July 4 has become an important date in the NFL just as March 1 and June 1 have for free agents. Whether it's an unwritten rule or just a huge coincidence, most NFL teams don't sign their rookies until after the Fourth of July.
This year is no exception. Just a handful of Day One picks from the draft have been signed and, as for the Vikings, only fourth-rounder Mewelde Moore has been inked. Expect that to change very soon.
VU has been told that talks with the rookies are going to heat up starting this week and, while the team would prefer to announce one group signing, it's more likely the signings will come one at a time.
Expect to see the second-day draftees sign up first with top picks Kenechi Udeze and Dontarrious Thomas signing shortly before the start of training camp.
Does this system make sense? No. But everyone else does it, so maybe they know something we don't about getting the ink on a contract.
