Around the NFL, coaches and scouts will tell you that you don't look at the starting lineup on the depth, you look at the second line on the flip chart -- those players who will be on the field in a pinch and at critical times.
With a combination of injuries, releases and ineffective play for the Tier II cornerbacks, the position remains a concern. To that end, the Vikings hope they can get help from cornerback Derek Ross, who the team signed off waivers this morning.
Ross, who was released by the Saints last weekend, will be joining his fourth team since last December. A former third-round pick of the Cowboys, they released him in December and he finished out the year with the Falcons, who let him go following the season.
It's unclear what the Vikings see in him that the others don't, but both the team and Ross hope this can be a place where he reclaims his career and helps improve a Vikings defense in need of depth.
* Marcus Robinson has been demoted to the No. 3 receiver and, to the apparent agitation of Mike Tice, won't get the job back until he earns it. Robinson, who was an 11th-hour scratch last Friday, isn't expected to play in either of the final two preseason games. His roster spot in the starting lineup is being taken by Nate Burleson, who Tice says will keep the job when the team opens the regular season, citing that he isn't willing to start a receiver that hasn't played in the preseason.
* Brian Williams continues to improve, but at this point he isn't expected to be ready to start in the regular season opener. Mike Tice said Monday that it would be a "best case scenario" to have Williams play nickel back for the opener.
* The Vikings will conduct an intrasquad passing scrimmage tonight at 7 p.m. at the National Sports Center in Blaine. Tickets are $12 and will be available at the door.
