Eiland Cast Away

The Vikings made Deandre Eiland the first member of their 2004 draft class to be released Monday.

Deandre Eiland did just about everything he could to shoot himself in the foot last week in the preseason finale. During a game when he needed to be nearly perfect, Eiland made plenty of critical mistakes.

Those came back to haunt him Monday, as the Vikings announced they had released Eiland. In his place, the team signed third-year man Omare Lowe. Lowe was a fifth-round pick of the Dolphins in 2002 and spent most of 2003 on the Jets practice squad -- where he, like several others, played under new Vikings defensive coordinator Ted Cottrell.

TUESDAY NOTES
* The Vikings signed six players to their practice squad, including wide receivers Ben Nelson and Ryan Hoag, RB Butchie Wallace, safety Oliver Celestin, guard Anthony Herrera and punter Travis Dorsch.
* The Vikings tried to sign TE Ben Steele to their practice squad, but he was signed by the Packers.
* Denny Green and the Cardinals picked up CB Derek Ross, who was also among last weekend's cuts.
