Rosenthal, Sass Go To I.R.

The Vikings officially placed Mike Rosenthal and Jim Kleinsasser on injured reserve.

Mike Rosenthal's foot injury has left the Vikings with a void at right tackle that officially became a season-long problem today. The Vikings announced that Rosenthal has been placed on injured reserve -- meaning he is out for the remainder of the season.

VU has been told that the surgery on his broken foot has been scheduled for Friday and the rehab time is five to six months.

Jim Kleinsasser got a second opinion on his knee injury from a specialist in Alabama and the word wasn't any better than he had heard locally. His knee will require surgery and he too was placed on injured reserve.

THURSDAY NOTES
* To replace Rosenthal on the 53-man roster, the Vikings re-signed Sean Berton, who was one of the final cuts of training camp.
* To replace Kleinsasser on the roster, Kenny Mixon was activated following his two-game suspension.
* The Vikings aren't the only team facing problems due to injury. Three of the four starters in the Bears secondary are injured -- two are gone for sure and a third isn't likely to play. Safety Mike Brown is lost for the season after blowing out his Achilles last Sunday. Charles Tillman is out for two months and CB Jerry Azumah is doubtful to play Sunday - which could make for a field day for Daunte Culpepper and Randy Moss.
* Dontarrious Thomas has been yanked from the starting lineup for Sunday. Keith Newman will move to starter at strongside linebacker and Chris Claiborne will switch to weakside linebacker.
