The Vikings are targeting the Nov. 28 game against Jacksonville as the return date for injured receiver Randy Moss, who has missed the last two games because of a strained right hamstring.
"If he can practice all week, he'll be (active)," coach Mike Tice said. "Now whether that's Detroit this week, which I doubt it is, or Jacksonville the following week, which is more than likely, then we're right on track with what (head trainer) Chuck Barta said it would be."
The Vikings are 0-2 without Moss after losing road games on last-second field goals against the Colts and Packers.
Moss strained the hamstring in the first half of the Oct. 17 game at New Orleans. He played two snaps against the Titans on Oct. 24 to keep his streak of games played alive.
A week later, he played nine snaps against the Giants as a decoy/red zone weapon. But Moss wasn't much of a decoy because it was obvious he couldn't run. Moss' leg then tightened up before the Vikings could reach the red zone. Moss didn't catch a pass against the Titans or Giants and watched the second half of both games in street clothes.
In both situations, Moss convinced Tice that if he could practice on the Friday before the game, he would be OK to play. Tice finally convinced Moss the week before the Colts game to undergo an MRI, which revealed a partial tear. Moss realized for the first time that it was a legitimate injury that needed time to heal.
Tice on Monday defended his decision to let Moss play with the injury in two games before sitting out. He claims Moss did not injure himself further by playing in those games.
"(Barta) said it was going to be a four- to six-week injury before Randy was 100 percent," Tice said. "If Randy comes back for Jacksonville or Chicago (Dec. 5), that would be right. More than likely it will be Jacksonville."
Look for Moss to be listed as doubtful for this week.
* Defensive tackle Spencer Johnson may be one more step away from completely supplanting Steve Martin. After de-activating Martin Sunday to give Johnson more playing time, he made seven tackles Sunday. Look for him to be responsible for sitting Chris Hovan on more plays Sunday.
* Mewelde Moore could miss another game with a sprained ankle -- postponing the running back by commitee.
Moss Likely Out One More Week
