The Vikings have agreed to terms with cornerback Fred Smoot, late of the Washington Redskins. Terms are reported to be six years for $30 million, including a $10 million signing bonus. Viking Update will update this report as more details become available and in tomorrow morning's update.
Smoot, a 5-11, 174-pounder, will be entering his fifth NFL season. He has averaged 46 tackles and four interceptions a year in his four NFL seasons. Despite the average number of tackles per year, Smoot is considered a durable player and the Vikings like his run-support ability.
The Vikings were in closed-door negotiations most of the afternoon with Smoot's agent and placed a heavy priority on his signing. He was scheduled to meet with Kansas City tonight and Chiefs general manager Carl Peterson was said to be ready to pick up Smoot personally, but Smoot skipped his original flight to Kansas City late this afternoon before he came to terms with the Vikings.
