VU was told earlier today that Matt Birk underwent hip surgery and, while it was successful, his timetable for return is three to four months.
Doing simple math, if the injury is on the short end of three months, Birk would return just in time for the season opener Sept. 11. If it turns out to be on the long end of the timetable, he would likely be shut down until after the Vikings bye week in Week 5.
VU will follow up on this story in our next update with more details, including the claim that the hip injury was likely a direct result of Birk's three sports hernia surgeries -- the hip injury caused by overcompensating for the hernia.
