NFL Steps Up Preseason Coverage

For NFL junkies, the preseason won't be about reading accounts of games on the Internet, in newspapers or short highlight packages on sports channels. The NFL is stepping up its coverage of the preseason with no fewer than 55 games broadcast in one month.

When the NFL announced the creation of the NFL Network, a service available on most satellite TV packages, some feared it would usher in the era of pay-per-view football.

While that hasn't happened yet, the NFL's exposure on its own channel is going to increase significantly this year -- which could be a boon for Vikings fans outside of Minnesota who don't get to see most preseason games because they're carried only by local affiliates.

The NFL will broadcast 55 preseason games in August -- most on tape delay -- to give NFL fans their daily fix of game footage throughout the preseason. The plan is to carry eight games live and the rest on tape delay -- with one half being the feed of the home team affiliate and the other half coming from the road team's announce crew.

For fans who have the network or are interested in purchasing the service, VU will keep you updated as to when Vikings preseason games are scheduled to air.
