The word coming out of Winter Park as training camp opened was that the intention was to get both first-round draft picks signed and in camp as quickly as possible. It was expected Troy Williamson would be the last of the two to sign, since Erasmus James and his agent were both in Minnesota and a deal was said to be pending.
Instead Williamson has been signed and James remains on the sideline. Why? Because of the draft location that James was taken at. His No. 18 slot is the only pick outside of the No. 3 selections that is surrounded by two other draftees that haven't signed. He is behind Cincy's David Pollack at No. 17 and ahead of the Rams' Alex Barron at No. 19. Until one of them signs, it might be more difficult for the Vikings and James' agent to reach an agreement.
A vigil continues.
* Fred Smoot is still on the physically unable to perform list and, while he is expected to return to practice next week, he is likely to be held out of the preseason opener Aug. 12 vs. the Chiefs.
* Smoot upset some Vikings fans by wearing a White Sox hat Monday, but told the media he's not a White Sox fan, he just thought "the hat looked tight."
* With Smoot and Brian Williams sidelined for much of the full contact practices, the team signed CB Ukee Dozier to give them some depth in the secondary.
