Mike Tice was pleased with how his team performed at minicamp, but not statisfied. Aside from discussions about potentially signing former Heisman winner Rashaan Salaam and bringing back Moe Williams at running back, the Vikings have targeted two positions before making a free agent push for a veteran wide receiver in June.
Those positions are safety and guard, both of which are going to be seriously chased this month. At guard, the Vikings are looking for a backup (for now) and at the tops on their radar screen are Rick Tylski, who was cut last week by the Steelers, and Max Lane, who was out of football last year.
However, the safety position is one that the offer of a starting job may follow, and the Vikings have a couple of players firmly in their sights. Victor Green, formerly of the Jets, and Ronnie Bradford of the Falcons are both players that Tice believes could come in and contend with current starters Tyrone Carter and Don Morgan.
All four players are among the free agents the Vikings have planned for visits next week, as the ever-changing roster continues to take shape. One thing is certain for Vikings fans -- if you aren't hard core, you will need a program.
* A buzz word this off-season among many NFL teams has been the term "chemistry." Teams want players not only that have talent, but leadership and the ability to work as a unit. That, it is being said, is what had left Cris Carter on the open market -- the perception he will be bad for chemistry and what has made teams like the Rams, Browns, Packers, Saints, Eagles and Dolphins all back away from him.
* Some good news for a friend of VU was announced Tuesday, when Paul Allen, host of a popular radio show on KFAN-Radio (1130 AM, Minneapolis) was named the play-by-play voice of the Vikings for the 2002 season. Allen was in the running for the job last year but was rejected twice. Allen is a great announce partner who will bring life to the broadcasts and yet another new look to the 2002 Vikings.
