Alexander Makes Rounds, Talking Vikes Deal

While Derrick Alexander is making the rounds, his agent is still talking deal with the Vikings.

The Derrick Alexander free agency tour has two stops planned, but that doesn't mean he won't be wearing purple -- even though neither of the stops is at Winter Park.

On Tuesday, Alexander visited New England and it was said to be a very good meeting with the Pats. Today, he moved on to Tampa Bay, a meeting he said he was going to make despite his agent in the middle of contract talks with the Vikings.

The latter part of that statement is the most important to the Vikings. VU sources in Tampa say that, while he is seen as an option for the Bucs, the team believes the Vikings are the No. 1 team on his list and the Bucs are setting their sites on Keenan McCardell.

For the record, the bidding war on Alexander is going to come down -- if there is one at all -- to just the Vikings, Pats and Bucs. He has narrowed his choices down to those three teams, but the Vikings are expected to turn up the heat on getting a deal done starting in earnest today and hope to have a deal done by Thursday.

WEDNESDAY NOTES
* For all the talk from the agent of Antonio Freeman about interested teams, VU has been told no visits with any teams have been planned at this point.
* McCardell had what was termed a great visit with Kansas City, so good in fact he has canceled other visits and has reduced the teams he is willing to play for down to the Chiefs, Vikings and Bucs.
* VU has been told that the resignation of University of Minnesota president Mark Yudof to accept a similar post in Texas isn't being seen as a good sign by the front office boys with the Vikings. Yudof had stepped up his role in trying to get a joint stadium deal with the Vikings done and had said, despite budget woes at the university, the stadium was a top priority on his list. VU's been told that the Vikings brass is concerned that the next president at the U of M may not be as strong a proponent of helping out with a new stadium deal.
