Vikings to Visit with Another QB Wednesday

The Vikings aren't hiding their interest in drafting a quarterback. They are doing their due diligence with a draft visit planned for the second straight day with another quarterback. See what this QB had to say at the NFL Combine and TFY Draft Preview's analysis of him.

Fresh off their visit with Vanderbilt's Jay Cutler, the Vikings are scheduled to meet with Clemson's Charlie Whitehurst Wednesday, according to a league source. first reported the Vikings' interest in Whitehurst last week, and he is considered a strong candidate to start in the West Coast offense in the future.

"I'm not a real shifty runner, but I think I'm a guy that can make all the throws, sit in the pocket, get first downs and win football games," Whitehurst said at the NFL Combine.

At 6-foot-4, 215 pounds, Whitehurst is the fifth-ranked quarterback in the 2006 draft, according to's rankings, behind Matt Leinart, Vince Young, Cutler and Alabama's Brodie Croyle.

So how does he convince scouts and coaches that he belongs with the top quarterbacks?

"Your game film is what it is, and I think there's definitely a lot of it," he said. "I'd love to be at 100 percent these past couple months with my shoulder - surgery at the end of the year. I think if I would have been 100 percent at the Senior Bowl, I would kind of be in the mix even more. It's kind of hard to prove yourself when you're not at 100 percent, not
that I'm far away from it. I think I will have a chance to do that and prove it. You just have to get out there and throw in front of them and let them see the ball come out of your hands."

Whitehurst had shoulder surgery after the last regular-season game and played in his bowl game 3-1/2 weeks later. He said at the Combine he thought he could be selected as high as the second round as long as his shoulder allowed him to throw well at this pro day.

"I think I'm a better athlete than they think I am," he said. "We'll see, I guess, on Sunday how fast I am. I think I'm a better athlete than most people give me credit for."

Whitehurst met with Kansas City and Dallas, among other teams, at the Combine and is also scheduled to meet with the Jets before the draft.
