Vikes Stadium Deal Moves Forward

The talk about a new stadium for the Vikings has been going on for years. Finally, a step to get it done is being taken.

Red McCombs has publicly groused about a stadium deal for the Vikings and the University of Minnesota. The State Legislature, which originally balked a stadium proposal, seems to have changed its tune in the aftermath of the Twins being threatened with contraction that got their stadium deal up and running.

So, with the NFL's G-3 money pool -- worth about $50 million to the Vikings -- ready to dry up next spring, action is finally beginning to get a stadium deal.

VU learned Monday from a source with the University of Minnesota that that school has approved having architectural design blueprints to be made for a proposed stadium near the university campus.

The idea, from what we were told, was that the blueprints will give an actual face to a stadium and give the legislators a chance to see exactly what is being proposed so funding for the stadium can clear the state hurdles in time for the Vikings to access the $50 million still available from the league.

While the move in no way assures a stadium deal will be done, it moves the wheels forward and, for probably the first time, shows a legitimate effort being made to get a new football-only stadium in Minnesota that will assure the long-term stability of the Vikings.

* Two-time former Viking Fernando Smith has found work, signing a one-year deal with Carolina Monday.
* The Vikings are intending to start signing rookies, but, as has become a leaguewide trend, signings to date are few and far between. As of Tuesday morning, only 33 of the 261 draft picks have been signed -- none as of yet by the Vikings.
* Happy birthday wishes are in order for the reviled Green Bay Packers. Eighty years ago today (June 25, 1922) the Packers were admitted into the NFL and several Packers fans got drunk. It's nice to see that some things never change. The names may change but the BAC numbers stay the same.
